Chapter 7 - Observations

Today I have a plan, and it's very simple: I'm going to look, listen, and just observe. Hoping I'll stumble upon something.

As I walk from my math class to biology, I decide to take a different hallway to avoid the main traffic. As soon as I turn the corner, I hear the new cleaner arguing with the administrative assistant: "How do you expect me to clean everything, but you won't let me into certain rooms?" I hear a lot of muttering, and then the cleaner's final words: "Just get some extra keys," before she leaves the hallway.

As I'm walking around the courtyard during break, I see the substitute janitor. He's acting nervous; he keeps looking around and looks like he's trying to avoid the police. Not overly so, but enough to be noticeable if you pay attention. He also starts picking at his fingers; a nervous tic. I walk past him a few times, but nothing much happens beyond that. I make a mental note to tell Mrs. Brooks later, and then head back inside.

Today was a long school day; it's almost dark, and most of the staff have already gone home. I quickly walk past my locker. The police are still busy at the offices, and in the middle of it all stands Mrs. Van Dalen, the assistant principal. She chats with one of the officers and then walks back to her own desk.

When I'm outside, it's cold, colder than usual this time of year. I walk around the school toward home. I look through the windows, each one pitch dark inside, except for one; the new IT guy is still working late at the school. Is he working overtime? I grab my phone and share my findings of the day with my mentor; the cleaning lady who wants more access, the substitute janitor who was incredibly nervous about the police, and the IT guy who hangs around the school late. I send the message and quickly get a response: "Good job, but also pay attention to those who doesn't stand out."
