I stood in front of Asher's door after knocking and tried to remember how breathing worked. Which was ridiculous.

I had stood in front of worse things than a dormitory door. I had walked into my father's office during the kind of meetings that made grown Alphas choose their words very carefully. I had stood in front of crowds and held rooms and never once had the particular problem I was currently having in this corridor.

My heart was beating way too fast. I pressed the back of my wrist against my mouth and exhaled slowly and told myself to pull it together.

I had planned tonight carefully, not with the cold precision I applied to things that were about strategy but with something else. With the particular attention you give to something that you want to get right for reasons that have nothing to do with outcome and everything to do with the person on the other side of the door.
