"What?" Jean was astonished.
"You want to use her as bait?" Logan frowned.
"Oh, my friends, I think you're forgetting one tiny detail." A wave of my hand, and an illusion of the girl in question appeared next to me, instantly smiling shyly at the mutants.
"You have the God of Intrigue and the Master of Magic on your side. So tell me, Professor, can we act out a little scene where the new girl's abilities cause a minor 'accident,' after which a young, impressionable girl decides to run away home?"
A devious smirk climbed onto my face all on its own.
….
Erik Lehnsherr:-
"...everything is going according to plan, expect her at the central station. The farewell gift has been left," the phone informed the leader of the Brotherhood of Mutants.
"Excellent work. Wait for us at the extraction point," the mutant disconnected the call.
Magneto's heart was uneasy. Ever since the open hearings on the Registration Act, minor and not-so-minor troubles had begun to pursue him.
First, an untimely encounter with Charles right in the Capitol building. Riding the wave of emotion from that neo-Nazi Kelly's speech, he had poorly controlled his thoughts, resulting in his old friend learning part of the plan.
Then Sabretooth's disappearance on a simple mission to grab an unsuspecting girl ended with the girl under Xavier's protection.
Even the successful capture of Senator Kelly hadn't brought the expected effect; barely had he undergone the operation when he managed to escape that very night.
Fortunately, the news from Mystique inspired optimism.
Sending her to visit his old friend hadn't been in vain. It was a pity he couldn't keep her there long, even her talents for shapeshifting and mind control likely wouldn't be enough to hide in a house with two telepaths for more than a day or two. But that had proven sufficient.
And when Charles tried to use Cerebro after the girl's abduction, a "pleasant surprise" would await him.
After all, they had developed that machine together.
Magneto knew its working principles perfectly, so selecting a chemical to neutralize the "thought dampener" hadn't been a problem for him.
However, he believed in his old friend and understood perfectly well that Charles could handle the overload himself, despite his respectable age.
But it would give Erik a head start ranging from a few days to a couple of weeks due to Xavier being taken out of the game. More than enough.
Donning his suit, he ordered Toad to prepare the helicopter, it was time to move out for the most important part of the plan.
Finding Rogue wasn't difficult. She was sitting on a train to Denver, alone, lonely, and lost. Turned out to be unwanted by those she had just begun to trust. More than a suitable mindset for the realization of his ideas.
"Hello, Rogue," he greeted the girl, standing in the aisle.
"Who are you?" she raised her gaze to him warily.
"Your brother," he answered. "A mutant," he clarified, seeing the lack of understanding on her face.
"And what do you want from me?" the girl backed away fearfully closer to the window, unconsciously wrapping herself in her green coat.
"You," short and clear.
"What… What if I don't want to?" the runaway's gaze darted around, and a lump clearly rose in her throat.
"I'm afraid you have no choice," he shook his head sympathetically. "I wouldn't want to use force, however…"
A mental effort, a slight raising of his hand, and the train car screeched with tearing metal.
The section of the wall the girl was pressing against twisted outward and crumpled into neat steps, shattering the glass.
The resulting ramp down to the platform unambiguously indicated to the young mutant the direction she had better take.
Belated screams of people filled the air, luggage tumbled from the racks, but the incipient panic didn't have time to turn into a stampede, for in the next instant all the passengers were pinned tightly to their seats by twisted handrails.
"Okay," Rogue pushed out, her face pale as she glanced sideways at what had become of the window she had just been leaning against.
As he expected, the ordeals she had endured had broken her, and even such a small thing was enough to crush her will to resist at the root.
It was a pity he had to act this way, especially toward a representative of his own kind, but… this is war, and war cannot do without sacrifices.
The only thing he could do for her was promise that future generations would remember her as a heroine with whom the mutants' victorious march across the world began.
The prisoner didn't resist and obediently went where she was told. Just as obediently, she got into the prepared helicopter and allowed handcuffs to be put on her.
Neither the police nor anyone else had time to react before they set off for the base, deviating slightly from the course on the way to pick up Mystique, who had played her role.
"What are you going to do to me?" meeting the appearance of the blue-skinned woman with red hair in the cabin with huge eyes, the girl made her first attempt to pull herself together.
"You will learn about that in due time," Magneto answered.
"But I didn't do anything to you, why? What am I guilty of?"
"There is no guilt of yours here, but this is war, and your power must serve the goal of mutant victory in this war."
"What war?"
"The one that is about to flare up," Erik shook his head, catching the prisoner's bewildered look. "Humans will never accept us, and if we do not strike the first blow, they will."
"But… but… there are more and more mutants every year, they even say so on the news. Doesn't that mean that in a few years there will be no ordinary people left, or we will become the majority? Why fight then?"
