As Elena leaves, Kael steps back into the room to check on me. But his usually unreadable expression feels... off. There is a strange sort of uneasiness hidden behind his stoic mask.
He gives the room a quick sweep, gives a short nod, and is about to close the door to stand guard in the hallway. But I stop him.
"Kael, come here."
He stops, looks at me, steps back inside, and clicks the door shut behind him. He walks over to where I am laying, and I pat the edge of the mattress, telling him to sit.
He hesitates. He clearly doesn't want to break knightly protocol by sitting on his Lady's bed.
So, I just shoot him a sharp, warning glare. He immediately sits down, his back perfectly straight.
"Yes, My Lady?" he says softly.
"What is it?" I ask, sitting up and crossing my legs.
"What, My Lady?" he deflects smoothly.
"Is there anything you want to say to me?" I press, raising an eyebrow.
His eyes shift as he thinks for a moment, and then he slowly shakes his head.
