Chapter 89 - Volume 2, Chapter 23: The Rain of Scorching Justice

The air in the inner bay of Marineford, once crisp and freezing, instantly mutated into a suffocating, sulfur-choked furnace. High upon the defensive ramparts, Admiral Sakazuki. Akainu stepped to the precipice. His face was a mask of grim, absolute intolerance for the pirate scourge. To him, there was no room for tactical compromise or emotional hesitation; there was only the total, merciless eradication of evil.

"To think you scum believe a broken wall can save you," Akainu muttered, his deep voice dripping with venom.

His right arm bubbled, transforming into a churning, hyper-pressurized column of liquid magma. The intense heat radiated outward, instantly blistering the skin of the nearby Marines who scrambled to get out of his radius. He thrust his fist directly up into the sky, his expression shifting into one of pure, unadulterated execution.

"Meteor Volcano!" he roared.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

A rapid-fire volley of colossal, molten fists erupted from his arm, soaring high into the clouds before arching downward like a cataclysmic meteor shower. The sky over Marineford turned a terrifying, apocalyptic shade of crimson as hundreds of superheated magma boulders rained down upon the frozen bay.

The impact was utter devastation. When the magma meteors struck Aokiji's ice sheets, they didn't just smash the frost. They instantly flash-boiled it. Massive explosions of scalding steam and boiling water geyered into the air. The vast, solid battlefield the pirates had spent hours fighting across dissolved in a matter of seconds, turning into a churning, turbulent sea of boiling water, burning debris, and melting ice floes.

"The ice is melting!" a New World pirate shrieked, desperately clawing at a shrinking chunk of frost as the boiling water swallowed his legs. "We're losing our footing! We're trapped in the water!"

Amidst the screaming chaos, Monkey D. Luffy was sprinting desperately toward the center breach, his eyes locked single-mindedly on the execution platform. The sudden destruction of the ice threw him off balance, his rubber soles slipping against the slick, collapsing frost.

"Luffy! Keep moving forward! Don't look back!" Jinbe's voice boomed over the roar of the steam.

The former Warlord lunged through the rising vapor, his heavy, muscular Fish-Man frame anchoring itself to a stable ridge of stone. But before Luffy could take another step, a terrifying presence materialized from the mist. Vice Admiral Onigumo blocked the path, his cold, merciless eyes fixed on the rubber boy.

With a dark smirk, Onigumo activated his half-spider Zoan transformation. Six segmented, dark spider limbs erupted from his back, joining his two human arms. He drew eight standard-issue Marine sabers simultaneously, his advanced Armament Haki flowing smoothly down the steel until all eight blades gleamed with an ink-black, lethal polish.

"The son of Dragon ends here," Onigumo hissed, his eight arms blurring into a synchronized, high-speed execution web that prepared to shred Luffy into mincemeat.

"I don't think so, Vice Admiral!"

SLASH!

A brilliant cascade of pink rose petals cut through the steam, intercepting four of Onigumo's Haki-coated sabers dead-on. Vista, the 5th Division Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates, slipped into the fray, his signature top hat perfectly straight, a confident, rakish smile gracing his mustache. His twin sabers spun with effortless, master-level dexterity, deflecting Onigumo's advanced multi-blade strikes with poetic grace.

"Go, Luffy!" Vista called out, his eyes locked onto the Marine veteran. "We will handle the anchor!"

"Fish-Man Karate..." Jinbe rumbled, stepping up to Vista's opposite flank. He drew his fist back, condensing the moisture in the humid, steam-filled air directly around his webbed fingers, focusing the raw kinetic energy of the sea. "...Seven hundred Brick Punch!"

Jinbe drove his fist forward into the void. A massive, invisible shockwave of pressurized moisture exploded through the air, colliding violently with the remaining four swords of Onigumo's eight-blade assault.

CRACK!!!

The three-way clash between the New World heavyweights and the ruthless Vice Admiral detonated in a spectacular, cinematic shockwave of wind and Haki. Onigumo bared his teeth, his spider legs flexing as he maintained his ground against the combined might of a legendary Fish-Man and the world's premier flower-swordsman. The sheer kinetic friction turned the surrounding steam into a vacuum of whistling air, buying Luffy the crucial, golden window he needed to slip past the blockade and leap toward the inner plaza.

However, the cinematic elegance of the commanders' clash did not change the terrifying reality on the lower ground. Akainu's Meteor Volcano was still raining down, and the trajectory of several massive, roaring magma boulders was tracking directly toward the retreating rear-guard of the Marines.

"Ahhhh! It's coming right for us!" Helmeppo shrieked, his knees completely buckling as he collapsed onto a cracking sheet of ice. He covered his face with his arms, staring up in absolute horror at a building-sized mass of liquid fire screaming down from the heavens.

Beside him, Koby was paralyzed. His newly awakened sensory instincts were picking up the horrific, agonizing screams of hundreds of soldiers dissolving in the boiling bay, and the sheer psychological weight of the slaughter had locked his muscles. He couldn't move. He couldn't breathe. He was a sitting duck.

"Get down, you idiots!"

A violent, green-tinted blur tackled Koby and Helmeppo simultaneously, dragging them out of the direct impact zone and slamming them down onto a reinforced stone platform.

Tenjin stood over them. His hyperactive personality was entirely gone, replaced by a frantic, fiercely protective desperation. He didn't have time to use his aerial flower propulsion; he needed pure, grounded mass to stop a literal mountain of magma.

BOOM!

Tenjin slammed both bare hands onto the stone floor. He forced his Devil Fruit powers past their logical limits, drawing deep from the subterranean nutrients of Marineford's foundations.

"Colossal Canopy!" Tenjin roared, his voice cracking with immense strain.

Thick roots of ancient, iron-dense timber erupted from his arms and the surrounding stone, twisting and interlocking at supersonic speed to form a massive, multi-layered dome directly over Koby, Helmeppo, and a dozen panicked Marine recruits. The wood was packed so tightly that it mimicked the density of reinforced armor plating.

A microsecond later, the magma meteor struck the apex of the canopy.

CRASH!!!

The sheer, weight-driven kinetic force of the meteor threatened to drive the entire wooden dome straight into the earth. Tenjin gasped, his boots shattering the stone beneath him as his knees buckled under the titanic pressure. But the physical weight wasn't the worst part. It was the heat.

Akainu's magma was an unnatural, absolute element. The superheated liquid fire began to instantly melt and char through the dense layers of the Wood. The intense, blistering heat bled straight through the timber, cooking the air inside the dome.

"Argh!!! Damn it... damn it all!!!" Tenjin screamed in pure, unadulterated agony.

The heat swept over his exposed shoulders and upper back, instantly blistering and melting his skin into raw, crimson burns. The fabric of his Marine captain's coat caught fire, turning to ash as the liquid magma began to slowly seep through the top layer of the roots, dripping down like burning wax.

"Tenjin!" Koby cried out, tears streaming down his face as he looked up at his friend. Tenjin's teeth were bared so hard they were bleeding, his muscles tearing under the strain, his green hair singed by the sparks. "Stop! It's too much! You're going to get burned to ash!"

"Shut up, Koby!" Tenjin barked through his teeth, a spray of blood escaping his lips as he pushed his arms upward, forcing new layers of black wood to sprout and replace the charred fibers that were melting away. "I am a Marine Captain! I don't leave my men behind to get melted by our own damn superiors!"

The pain was a white-hot knife twisting into his spine, but the stubborn, protective flame Gion had nurtured within him refused to be snuffed out. He looked up through a tiny gap in the burning canopy, his emerald eyes locking onto the distant, stoic figure of Admiral Akainu standing safely on the high ramparts, completely indifferent to the collateral damage his 'absolute justice' was causing to his own soldiers.

"Hey! You magma-brained psycho!!!" Tenjin screamed at the top of his lungs, his voice echoing fiercely over the roar of the burning meteors. "What kind of absolute justice involves burning your own damn men to death?! You're not a hero, you're just a glorified campfire with an ego! Screw your justice!!!"

Helmeppo's jaw dropped in absolute, terrified shock. "T-Tenjin! You can't talk to an Admiral like that! That's treason! He'll kill you!"

"Let him try!" Tenjin roared, his aura flaring to a frantic, volatile peak as he executed a massive, final push of his Wood properties.

With a titanic heave of his scorched arms, he forced the roots to expand outward in a violent, spring-loaded release, physically throwing the remains of the melting magma meteor off the side of the platform and into the boiling sea below.

The canopy collapsed into a pile of smoking, black ash. Tenjin fell to one knee, coughing violently as thick black smoke escaped his lungs. His shoulders and back were a horrific tapestry of deep, weeping burns, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. He was entirely spent, his stamina bottoming out from the sheer effort of matching an Admiral's casual output.

Koby and Helmeppo immediately rushed to his side, supporting his weight as the chaotic battle continued to rage in the background. Vista, Jinbe, and Onigumo were still locked in their furious stalemate, and the boiling bay was a testament to the absolute ruthlessness of the World Government.
