A playful smile played at Emery's lips as she twirled the drink in her glass. Few could guess at her thoughts.
" Just what the hell are you up to?"
Spoke a voice dripping with suspicion from her side. Emery glanced to the side to look at the miniature floating virtual husky who was busy overstuffing its mouth like a squirrel yet still having the energy to nitpick at her. She sometimes couldn't help but wonder just where he even stored all that food. It's not like it could even eat it. Yet here it was draining away at her salary faster than a toddler can make a mess.
Feeling grievance Emery raised her hand in order to make her grievances known. Even with its mouth overstuffed with cookies the system was as feisty as ever, easily avoiding and then glaring at the hand trying to poke at its cheeks. Emery could only take back her hands with pursed lips.
Seeing her back down the dog huffed and continued eyeing the jello. But it was not a system for nothing after all. Even with food occupying 99.99% of its mind it still spared that 0.01% to continue tormenting it's poor host.
" Like all you have done so far was act like a stalker and even then you played hooky. I can count the number of times you have taken the initiative to intervene on one hand!!!...oh...well paw. But that's barely the point! The real point is just WHEN are you planning to act!?!? It's not like we can wait forever."
By the end of it's speech the husky had already settled on what flavour of jello it was going to eat and the answer was most obviously all of them. Just as he was about to bite down Emery grabbed it by its tail and flung it towards the chocolate fountain.
The husky could only huff before diving down.
" First of all, patience Mister. You don't want to beat the grass and startle the snake." Said Emery with a calm voice as she celebrated her small victory.
" In situations like these where I am not allowed to mess things up too much, observation is key. If not for that then I could have just killed off one of them or cause chaos big enough for the Zergs to call back their princess. But no! Here I am stuck with babysitting those two because I still need them alive and well."
Hearing its host complain the husky rolled its eyes and licked its chocolate stained lips before taking another jab at her. " Are you sure that you aren't just using that 'Minimal damage' clause as reason to procrastinate? Because let's be honest, the only observation that you have done since our arrival is watching them tear each other apart over the test that you deliberately made to have multiple different answers and eat popcorn while you're at it."
If she was currently drinking something now would most probably be a good time for her to turn into a sprinkler. Good thing for Emery that she had just finished her drink a second ago and hadn't had the time to grab a new one.
Emery sighed. Sometimes she just couldn't comprehend how the mind that only thought about food and running her pockets dry still had the brain cells to analyze things. The husky on the other hand was completely unaffected and was still busy with eating as if the conversation never happened.
Emery could only smile and turn away, knowing fully well that if she did not start doing something soon the darn dog would never let her live it down. Lucky for her the people she was waiting for finally spotted her and she was quick to wave them over.
Amongst the hall's music and chatter two distinct voices called out at the same time in unison -
" Mentor E!"
Both Merideth and Xavier stood their movements and exchanged wide-eyed glances, their expressions a mix of shock and disbelief as they processed each other's presence. It took a moment but the second they realized their actions with identical movements, they both knocked on the nearest wooden surface.
While neither believed in superstitions but if there was one more thing that could ward off the bad luck the other always seemed to bring they were willing to do a rain dance for all they cared for.
Observing their antics, Emery could hardly suppress the faint smile tugging at her lips. With swift motions she quietly stuffed her husky companion who was still busily munching away, under the table before greeting the pair with a casual nod of her head.
Seeing their mentor's approach both Merideth and Xavier gave each other one last fleeting glare before begrudgingly ignoring the other and approaching her. But as they drew closer curiosity gripped their minds as they looked at Emery, the unspoken question lingering,
Why had she summoned them both?
