Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Ascent of the Cursed Path

Chapter 23: The Ascent of the Cursed Path

The road to the Monolith was no longer a road. It had become a [MEMORY_CORRUPTION_ZONE].

As Elara and her core team—Kaelen, Joran, Mina, and the newly recruited Silas—left the relative safety of the Data-Well, the world began to blur. The trees at the edge of the path were "Stuttering," their leaves flickering between autumn orange and wireframe green. The ground beneath their feet felt like static-soaked carpet, vibrating with the groans of the dying server.

"Don't look directly at the horizon," Elara warned, her silver scars glowing with a protective hum. "The sky is leaking [NULL_VALUES]. If your eyes process too much of it, your visual drive will crash."

[LOCATION: THE FORBIDDEN ASCENT]

[DANGER LEVEL: S]

[ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECT: DATA_BLEED (Lose 1% HP every 10 seconds)]

"The HP drain is constant," Silas grunted, checking his hydraulic leg. "My sensors are going haywire. It feels like the world is trying to forget we exist."

"Mina, keep the [STABILITY_AURAS] up," Elara commanded.

Mina was sweating, her small hands clutching a glowing crystal she had "cooked" from the Purifier cores. "I'm trying! But the 'Unraveled' left a residue. The logic here is... slippery."

They encountered their first major obstacle at the Bridge of Syntax. The bridge was a massive span of golden light, but it was currently being eaten by a [VOID_WORM]—a massive, centipede-like creature made of missing textures and red error-code. It didn't have a health bar; it had a [CORRUPTION_PERCENTAGE].

[BOSS: THE VOID_WORM (SERVER_PARASITE)]

[CORRUPTION: 88%]

[LEVEL: ???]

"It's not attacking us," Kaelen noted, aiming his sniper-arm. "It's attacking the bridge. If it finishes eating that segment, we'll be trapped on this side of the ravine forever."

"We can't kill it with normal damage," Elara analyzed, her Kaleidoscope eyes spinning. "It's a 'Delete' process given form. We have to [OVERWRITE] it."

"How?" Joran asked, his sword crackling with violet static.

"We feed it a [LOGIC_BOMB]. Mina, give me a shard with the property 'Infinite Loop'. Kaelen, I need you to shoot that shard directly into its maw when it opens to bite the bridge."

Mina scrambled, her fingers glowing as she frantically re-coded a data-shard. "Here! Property set: [WHILE(TRUE){DO_NOTHING}]!"

The Void-Worm reared back, its mouth a chaotic vortex of black pixels, ready to snap another golden beam.

"Now!" Elara roared.

Kaelen didn't hesitate. He fired a high-velocity pulse, carrying Mina's shard. The shot was perfect, disappearing into the creature's throat.

For a heartbeat, nothing happened. Then, the Void-Worm froze. Its red error-code turned a dull grey. The "Loading" icons in its segments began to spin infinitely.

[STATUS: SYSTEM_HANG]

[TARGET IS EXPERIENCING AN INFINITE_LOOP_ERROR]

"It's stuck!" Silas cheered.

"Don't celebrate yet! Move!" Elara commanded. "The bridge is still unstable!"

They sprinted across the golden span. As they reached the other side, the Void-Worm "Crashed," its body exploding into a shower of harmless white particles.

[EXP GAINED: 2,500]

[ELARA: LEVEL 9]

[KAELEN: LEVEL 9]

[JORAN: LEVEL 10]

[NOTICE: JORAN HAS REACHED LEVEL 10. CLASS EVOLUTION AVAILABLE.]

They reached the base of the Monolith. Up close, the obsidian tower was terrifying. It hummed with the power of a billion calculations. At its base stood the [GUARDIANS OF THE THRESHOLD]—four towering knights in white armor, their levels hidden behind golden question marks.

[GUARDIAN_UNIT_01: LEVEL ??]

[STATUS: HOSTILE]

"Level 50s," Kaelen whispered, his voice failing. "Even with our levels, they'll delete us by just standing near us."

"They won't attack yet," Elara said, noticing the knights were staring at the sky, not at them. "They're prioritized to fight the 'Unraveled' breach. Look."

Above the Monolith, the sky was a nightmare. The black oil-static was pouring through the breach in massive waves. The golden beams from the tower were failing. One of the Guardians turned its head, its visor glowing with a mechanical light.

[PROCURING_IDENTITY...]

[RECOGNIZED: ANOMALY_01 (ELARA)]

[REQUESTING_INSTRUCTIONS_FROM_OVERSEERS...]

"Elara, they're communicating with the Core!" Silas warned.

A massive, booming voice echoed from the Monolith, shaking the very earth. It wasn't Valerius. It was something deeper, older.

"The Anomaly is the only variable remaining," the voice said. "Protocol 99: Temporary_Alliance. Allow the Exceptions to ascend. They are the 'Patch' we cannot write."

The four Level 50 Guardians stepped aside, their lances raised in a grim salute. A golden elevator-platform descended from the tower.

"They're letting us in?" Joran asked, his hand still on his sword. "It's a trap, Elara. As soon as we fix the breach, they'll delete us."

"I know," Elara said, stepping onto the golden platform. Her silver scars were pulsing with a violent intensity. "But if we don't fix it, there won't be a 'Us' to delete. Everyone, get on. We're going to the Root_Terminal."
