Chapter 158 - Chapter 151 — After the Line

It wasn't sudden.

That was the first thing Elias noticed.

There was no single moment he could isolate, no exact second where something changed and became something else.

It unfolded.

Gradually.

Like everything between them had been moving toward this long before either of them said it out loud.

Dominic didn't rush him.

Even now.

Especially now.

His hands were steady, deliberate never taking more than Elias gave, but never retreating either. Every movement felt like a question asked without words.

And every time

Elias answered.

Not with logic.

Not with hesitation.

But with quiet certainty.

When the tension finally eased, it didn't disappear.

It settled.

Lower.

Deeper.

Like something that had found where it belonged.

Elias stood still for a moment, his breathing slowly returning to normal, though nothing else about him felt the same.

Dominic was still close.

Still there.

Still… solid.

Real.

Elias became aware of that again the grounding presence of him before anything else.

Dominic didn't speak right away.

He just watched him.

Carefully.

"You okay?" he asked finally, voice quieter now.

Elias nodded once.

"Yes."

Dominic didn't look convinced.

"Just 'yes'?"

Elias frowned slightly.

"That is a sufficient response."

Dominic huffed a small laugh.

"Yeah, for you."

A pause.

"But I want the real answer."

Elias studied him.

Then answered more deliberately.

"I am… fine."

Dominic tilted his head.

"That sounded like you edited yourself halfway through."

Elias didn't deny it.

"That is accurate."

Dominic stepped a little closer not closing distance like before, just… making sure it was still there.

"You don't have to filter everything with me."

Elias hesitated.

Then exhaled quietly.

"I am not used to this."

Dominic's expression softened.

"I know."

Elias looked at him.

"Not just the physical aspect."

Dominic nodded slightly.

"I figured."

Elias's voice lowered.

"The lack of distance."

That landed.

Dominic didn't interrupt.

Didn't joke.

He just listened.

Elias continued, slower now

"I am accustomed to… control."

Dominic nodded again.

"Yeah."

"This is not that."

"No," Dominic said softly.

"It's not."

Elias met his gaze.

"And yet I did not attempt to stop it."

Dominic stepped closer again, gently this time, his hand resting lightly against Elias's arm.

"You didn't want to."

Elias didn't argue.

"No."

A quiet silence settled between them.

Different now.

Less charged.

More… real.

Dominic studied him for a moment.

Then asked carefully

"Do you regret it?"

Elias answered immediately.

"No."

The certainty in his voice surprised even him.

Dominic's shoulders relaxed slightly.

"Good."

Elias tilted his head.

"That outcome would have been problematic."

Dominic smiled faintly.

"Yeah, it would've."

Another pause.

Then Dominic added

"You're allowed to take a second, you know."

Elias frowned slightly.

"For what purpose?"

"To feel it."

Elias considered that.

Then looked at him again.

"I am."

Dominic blinked.

That answer

That wasn't deflection.

That wasn't analysis.

That was real.

"You are," Dominic repeated quietly.

"Yes."

Dominic exhaled slowly.

"Okay."

A small silence passed.

Then Dominic's hand moved slightly, brushing against Elias's again not pulling, not holding, just… there.

Elias noticed.

But didn't move away.

Didn't question it.

Didn't need to.

"You're still here," Dominic murmured.

Elias nodded once.

"Yes."

Dominic's voice softened.

"Still choosing it?"

Elias didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Dominic smiled.

Not teasing.

Not amused.

Just… genuine.

"That's all I needed to know."

Elias studied him.

"That seems insufficient."

Dominic chuckled softly.

"For you, yeah."

A pause.

"But for me? That's everything."

Elias didn't respond.

Because he didn't fully understand that.

But he didn't dismiss it either.

Dominic stepped closer again, their shoulders brushing lightly now.

"You know," he said quietly, "this is the part people don't talk about."

Elias tilted his head.

"What part?"

"The after."

Elias frowned slightly.

"Clarify."

Dominic smiled faintly.

"It's not always intense or dramatic."

A small pause.

"Sometimes it's just… this."

Elias looked at him.

"This?"

Dominic nodded.

"Staying."

Elias considered that.

Then, quietly

"That is acceptable."

Dominic laughed softly.

"High praise."

Elias didn't react.

Because, in his terms

It was.

A quiet stillness settled again.

Not empty.

Not uncertain.

Just… steady.

And for the first time since everything shifted

There was no urgency pushing them forward.

No tension forcing them closer.

No fear pulling them apart.

Just two people standing in the same space…

Choosing not to leave it.

Together.
