Chapter 31 - Shadows of the Past

The morning sun barely broke through the floating towers of the City Between Worlds.

Ethan walked slowly, the Fate Mark pulsing faintly. Every step reminded him that he was far from home—far from the Silver Forest, far from the world he once protected.

Lyria kept close, sensing his unease.

"What is it?" she asked softly.

Ethan shook his head. "I keep thinking… the choices I made before… the people I couldn't save. They're still with me."

A voice echoed across the plaza—a whisper of memories.

From the crowd, shadows formed. Not threatening, but familiar. Faces of people Ethan had failed in the past: villagers, soldiers, and even enemies he couldn't save. Their eyes were empty, accusing.

"Ethan…" Lyria whispered. "It's your mind… or something else?"

The shadows moved closer, forming a ring around him.

Ethan raised his hands, trying to call on his silver light. The Fate Mark glowed—but unevenly.

A calm voice spoke from above. Serenya stepped down.

"These are the Shadows of the Past," she said. "They are not real… but they will test your heart. Power without resolve is meaningless."

Ethan took a deep breath. "Then I'll face them—not with power, but with choice."

One by one, he stepped forward. Every shadow reflected a moment he regretted. Instead of fighting, he acknowledged them, letting the memories settle in silence.

Slowly, the shadows dissolved, leaving only the echo of a soft wind.

Lyria smiled. "You did it."

Ethan looked at the city skyline. "I did… but I can't stop here. If I want to protect everyone, I have to keep moving forward."

Serenya nodded approvingly. "Your heart is stronger than your mark. Remember that—it will guide you through what comes next."

And so, Ethan took the first true step toward mastery—not as a boy bound by fate, but as a leader shaping his own path.
