Chapter 84 - The Realm That Feeds on Doubt

The doorway closed behind them with a deep, echoing pulse.

Not a sound—

a heartbeat.

Ethan felt it immediately. The air was colder, but not empty. It pressed against the mind, whispering questions no one wanted to answer.

"Why does this place feel like it knows me?" Caelara asked quietly.

Selara's eyes narrowed. "Because this realm doesn't attack our bodies. It feeds on our doubts."

The ground beneath their feet reflected like dark glass. In it, Ethan didn't see his face—he saw moments he wished he could forget.

Failures. Hesitations. People he couldn't save.

Kael clenched his fists. "It's pulling from memory."

Before anyone could respond, the world split.

Ethan – The Weight of Leadership

Ethan stood alone again.

He was back in the City Between Worlds—but this time, it was burning.

People shouted his name, not in praise, but blame.

"You promised us safety!"

"You chose wrong!"

"You hesitated!"

Ethan covered his ears, but the voices came from inside.

A figure stepped forward—someone Ethan recognized too well.

A young boy. One he failed to save in an earlier season.

"You were supposed to protect me," the boy said calmly.

Ethan's knees weakened. "I tried."

"But trying wasn't enough," the boy replied.

Ethan felt doubt creep in like poison.

What if I'm not meant to lead?

What if I cause more harm than good?

Then a memory surfaced—Caelara standing beside him during his weakest moment, saying:

"Leadership isn't about never failing. It's about standing back up."

Ethan lifted his head.

"I failed," he said. "But I didn't abandon them."

The fire froze.

The illusion shattered.

Caelara – Fear of Being Unchosen

Caelara found herself in a quiet room filled with memories.

Moments of love. Moments of loss.

Ethan stood across from her—but his eyes passed through her.

He walked toward another version of the future. One where she wasn't needed.

"You'll always be second," a voice whispered.

"Loved… but never chosen."

Her chest tightened.

All her life, she had been strong for others. But what if strength made her replaceable?

Tears fell.

Then she remembered something Selara once told her:

"Love that depends on fear was never love to begin with."

Caelara straightened.

"I don't need to be chosen out of fear," she said. "I want to be chosen freely."

The room faded into light.

Kael – Fear of Losing Control

Kael stood in a world where he had lost.

His blade lay broken. His enemies stood laughing.

"You're nothing without strength," a shadow mocked.

"When you can't fight, who are you?"

Kael's jaw tightened.

For so long, power had been his identity.

Then he remembered standing behind Ethan—not as a weapon, but as a friend.

"I fight to protect," Kael growled. "Not to define myself."

He stepped forward—unarmed.

The shadows vanished.

Selara – Fear of Trust

Selara faced the hardest illusion.

She saw herself warning everyone of danger.

And being ignored.

Again.

And again.

"You always see it first," the realm whispered.

"But no one listens."

Loneliness cut deeper than fear.

Selara closed her eyes.

"I don't need certainty," she said softly. "I need faith—in them."

She reached out.

Hands met hers.

The illusion broke.

United Against Doubt

They reunited at the center of the realm, visibly shaken.

"This place wanted us to turn against ourselves," Caelara said.

Ethan nodded. "Doubt is easier to weaponize than fear."

The ground began to crack.

A new presence emerged—not the Arbiter.

Something older.

"You resisted doubt," the voice said.

"But the next realm will test sacrifice."

A bridge formed ahead—narrow, unstable, endless.

Kael exhaled slowly. "Sacrifice usually means someone doesn't come back."

Ethan looked at the team.

"Then we make sure no one walks alone."

They stepped onto the bridge—together.
