Chapter 85 - The Bridge That Demands a Price

The bridge trembled beneath their feet.

It was not made of stone or steel, but of light and shadow—thin, unstable, and alive. Every step echoed like a question asked by the universe itself.

Ethan walked first.

Not because he was fearless, but because he refused to let anyone else carry the weight alone.

Behind him came Caelara, her hand clenched tightly around the pendant at her neck. Kael followed, alert and silent. Selara walked last, her eyes scanning the endless darkness below the bridge.

"How long do you think it goes?" Kael asked quietly.

Selara shook her head. "It's not about distance. This bridge reacts to intent."

As if responding to her words, the bridge pulsed—and suddenly, symbols burned into the surface beneath Ethan's feet.

He stopped.

"What is it?" Caelara asked.

Ethan swallowed. "It's asking something… from me."

The First Price

A voice rose from the void—calm, ancient, and unforgiving.

"To cross, one must give what they value most."

Kael's grip tightened on his weapon. "This is a trap."

Selara nodded. "Not a physical one. A spiritual one."

The symbols beneath Ethan glowed brighter.

A vision appeared before him.

A future.

Peace.

The war ended.

The worlds united.

But Ethan was not there.

Caelara gasped. "Ethan… it's showing a world without you."

Ethan's chest tightened.

"So that's the price," he whispered. "My place in the future."

"No!" Caelara stepped forward. "We'll find another way."

The bridge cracked beneath them.

"Choice must be made," the voice said.

Ethan turned to her.

"I promised to protect everyone," he said softly. "Even if it costs me everything."

Caelara's eyes filled with tears. "And what about us?"

For a moment, the world fell silent.

Then Ethan said the words he had never allowed himself to say out loud.

"My heart chose you," he said. "That's why this hurts."

He stepped forward.

The bridge shattered.

Refusing the Rules

Instead of falling, Ethan felt a hand grab his.

Kael.

Then another.

Selara.

Then Caelara wrapped both arms around him, refusing to let go.

"We don't accept sacrifices that destroy us," she said fiercely.

"We choose together—or not at all."

The bridge froze mid-collapse.

The ancient voice faltered.

"That is… not how this realm works."

Selara's eyes glowed faintly. "Then your realm is outdated."

Light spread from where their hands joined.

The bridge reformed—stronger than before.

"Sacrifice acknowledged," the voice said slowly.

"But redefined."

The symbols changed.

Kael's Test

The bridge shifted again.

This time, Kael stood alone.

Before him appeared two paths.

One led to power—unlimited strength, enough to defeat any enemy.

The other led to loss—his blade shattered, his fighting days over.

"You fear weakness," the realm said.

"You fear being left behind."

Kael stared at the visions.

Then he stepped toward the path of loss.

"If strength costs who I am," he said, "then it's not strength worth having."

The blade in his hand cracked—

Then reforged itself into something simpler. Lighter.

Not a weapon of domination.

A weapon of protection.

Selara's Choice

Selara's test was quieter.

She was shown every possible future.

Thousands of timelines.

Most ended in failure.

"You see too much," the realm whispered.

"Choose one future. Lose the rest."

Selara closed her eyes.

"I don't need certainty," she said. "I need trust."

The futures collapsed into one.

A narrow but hopeful path.

Caelara's Truth

Finally, the bridge responded to Caelara.

She saw Ethan walking away—alive, but distant.

The price offered was simple.

Let go of love.

Keep him safe.

Tears streamed down her face.

"I won't trade love for safety," she said.

"Love is the reason I fight."

The bridge glowed warmly.

Crossing Together

They reached the end.

The realm trembled—not in anger, but in recognition.

"You have crossed," the voice said.

"Not by sacrifice… but by choice."

Ahead lay a new gate—larger, darker, marked with a single symbol:

THE TRIAL OF CONSEQUENCES

Ethan looked at the others.

"No matter what's next," he said, "we face it together."

Caelara squeezed his hand. "Always."

The gate began to open.
