"Zuri! Zuri! Are you in there!" The frantic shout of his name caused Zuri, who had been watering his plants, to step out from beside his cottage, only to find Freda and Hannah there.
"There you are! Come quickly—you must come quickly." They ran toward him, clutching at his sleeve.
"What is the ma—"
"Damaris!" At the mention of her name, his heart stopped; and when it began to beat again—without being told anything at all—his mind ran wild with images he did not wish to picture.
He had been with her but moments ago. He had just left her cottage, no more than an hour prior, so—
"What are you standing about for?! Come quickly! Damaris was—she was stuck by a carriage!"
Hannah's words had scarce landed when he took off. His entire mind was a blank slate filled with only one thing.
