The Whispering Woods lived up to their name. The wind through the ancient cedars sounded like a thousand voices plotting in secret. Kaito sat in the hollow of a massive, dead tree, his chest heaving. His right hand—the one carrying the Ring—glowed with a dull, throbbing purple that illuminated the stolen scroll in his lap.
He unrolled the Ledger of the Divided Earth. Unlike the history books in the Academy, which were made of cheap wood-pulp, this was vellum made from something ancient and indestructible.
The Unveiling of the Lie
As Kaito's eyes scanned the ink, the world around him seemed to dissolve. The Ring acted as a key, translating the dead language into images that flooded his mind.
In the Academy, Kaito was taught that the Great War was a chaotic time of demons, and that the Five Clan Founders saved humanity by creating five safe havens. The Ledger told a different story.
Four hundred years ago, there were no Clans. There was only one civilization. But it was a civilization on the brink of a "Great Ascension." Humans were learning to combine the elements. They were becoming too powerful—too close to the level of the Gods.
The True Nature of the Seal
Shin, the Protector, and Kage, the Unifier, were the leaders of this era. Kage wanted the world to ascend together. Shin feared that such power would lead to the extinction of the planet.
"He didn't just defeat me, Kaito," Kage's voice whispered, sounding hollow and bitter. "He lobotomized the world."
Kaito read the forbidden passage:
"And so, the map was torn. To ensure no one could ever reach the Pure Element again, the people were divided by blood. The Fire was sent to the ash, the Water to the tides, the Earth to the stone, and the Wind to the heights. The borders were not built to keep the enemies out—they were built to keep the elements apart."
Kaito gasped. The "Clans" weren't a source of pride. They were a biological prison. By keeping the bloodlines separate, Shin ensured that no single human would ever master more than one element again. The "Peace" of the last four centuries was actually a forced stagnation.
The Key Moment: The First Hybrid
Kaito looked at the Ring. He realized why the General wanted it so badly. It wasn't just a weapon; it was a Merge-Point.
"You are the glitch in his perfect prison, boy," Kage laughed, a dark, triumphant sound. "By finding the Ring, you have the potential to reunite the bloodlines. You can bridge the gap that Shin created."
Suddenly, the scroll began to smoke. A hidden "Self-Destruct" seal, placed by the High Elders to protect this secret, ignited. Kaito watched as the truth turned to ash in his hands.
"If the world is a prison," Kaito said, standing up as the orange embers reflected in his violet eyes, "then I'm not just a fugitive. I'm the one who's going to break the walls down."
The First Hunter Arrives
His epiphany was cut short. A drop of water fell on the charred scroll—but it didn't come from the sky. It came from a spear of condensed liquid hovering inches from his throat.
Out of the mist stepped a warrior in azure armor. Not a Fire-weaver. A Tide-Hunter from the Aqua Clan.
"The Ledger is destroyed," the Hunter said, his voice as cold as a mountain lake. "And your life ends with it, Flame-born. The balance must be maintained."
