Chapter 2 - As If Nothing Had Happened

Weeks elapsed, and I moved on with deceptive haste from the event of june 10th. I remained entirely oblivious to the truth: that from that day forward, my life would never be the same.

Allow me to introduce myself. I am Hirata Alex. You are about to bear witness to my story, which will reveal how this world– how reality itself is profoundly shaped by words. Literally! And beyond that? There is something else, something lurking in the shadows...

Three weeks have passed since the incident in the classroom. I have not told a single soul, and I do not intend to. It feels like I stumbled upon something I was not meant to see– or rather I was fated to see. Perhaps it was just a sign I chose to ignore back then...

Life fell back to its usual rhythm. I continued attending my lectures, listening to the professor drone on the History of the English Language. He even recited that same Middle English excerpt from that day, but nothing happened. It made wonder if I am somehow immune, or if I was just exhausted. Regardless, I have not touched any texts from the older English periods since my instincts are literally screaming at me to keep my distance.

I was a normal High School Student, Again my name is Hirata Alex, I was perhaps the most average Student probably ever and always curious, yet my redeeming qualities in school were English, Biology, and Physics. I was a big Failure in mathematics. I had always been the top student in English at my school, almost always achieved a full score on my English tests. that's why I decided to study English Linguistics at University; it was my passion, I had obsession with the English Language especially 15th-16th Century English! And yes, I had a talent of reading people like books, and predicting their reactions or internal emotions and monologs, though I can't lie to you... it sometimes proves the most accurate gift ever or just the most messed up thing ever...

For the first two years of university, I mostly studied a mixture both of English Literature and Linguistics, but in the 3rd year which is the Final, I can choose my own path, fully Literature or Linguistics. The answer was a no brainer to me, So I went with English Linguistics which changed my life– No, our lives...

The first two years of Hirata Alex's university life were remarkably standard. He immersed himself in the academic grind, cycling through various Linguistics courses– Syntax, Morphology, Semantics, and the like. Everything remained comfortably, almost hauntingly normal until his third year, when he enrolled in a course titled 'The History of the English Language.' To any observer, it would have seemed like an ordinary prerequisite, yet that specific course served as the catalyst for everything that followed– the true genesis of this story.

Hirata Alex meets a classmate whose name is Haruto Okabe, He's a hardworking and Persistent person, as well as dubious and curious. He values hard work and never goes back on his rituals if unneeded. But Haruto Possesses something that's beyond persistence and hard work, something that hold the world in its current shape; Stable, Calm, yet unsettling...

Hirata greets Haruto in a sincere and genuine warmth "Nice to meet you, My name is Hirata Alex, Looking forward to graduate with you!"

Haruto answers coldly but not Cruelly "Hello, My name is Haruto Okabe, looking forward to study with you."

Hirata Asks Haruto "What do you think of this major so far? Now that we are graduating this year."

Haruto Answers "I want to learn the truth about this world, this world is far darker and more mysterious than we imagine it."

Hirata reacts humorously "But we are English Linguistics students, we have almost nothing to do with history. Why did you get in this major?"

Haruto Answers coldly "Hirata, seems like you are the most average person in the world, of course you do not why, it's very deep, you can laugh if you want but this the truth."

Hirata Reacts uncomfortably. Then says "judging by your eye movements and your tone, I can tell that you are not joking, I truly wonder what is being transpired..."

Haruto "Plenty had called me crazy and still do, I am sure you are saying that in your head as well, not that I care."

Hirata Reacts reflexively "NO! NOT AT ALL! Actually– something happened a while ago that I am not willing to tell anyone about, maybe it connects or relates with the thing that you are talking about."

Haruto offered a dismissive wave, his expression settling into a mask of weary skepticism "I certainly hope this is not going to be another one of those tiresome, 'I saw a ghost in the dead of the night', stories."

Hirata answers with a defensive yet polite tone "No- it is not that and nowhere near that, it is actually related to something regarding the language itself, now you might be the one who calls me crazy."

Haruto Answers in a curious tone "wa-wait... what actually did you witness? I may have experienced something related to that..."

The atmosphere gets tense and serious

Hirata "Three weeks ago, I had a lecture in the History of the English Language, everything was normal, the professor left the class but I stayed for some time to copy the notes he had provided, the classroom was empty, when I finished copying and was about to leave... I-I- I know u will not just believe me..."

Haruto Answers instinctively with seriousness "Speak up, I'm all ears!"

Hirata "The board had an Example of the Middle English period, I read it aloud out of curiosity after all it was just a word from a Dead tongue, Middle English is a dead language and that's known."

Hirata continues "The moment I said that word, something in the classroom happened, the Whole room felt under intense pressure and the chalk literally almost broke to pieces and got chipped, not only that... the word that I said did not phonetically fade, I know that doesn't make sense but the word kept echoing in the classroom, the chalk barely managed to stay in one piece, but something about moment left me shocked... I don't know what to say– OH YEA! I said too much nonsense didn't I?" Hirata chuckles in an awkward smile.

Haruto stares at Hirata in shock as if he has seen some kind of alien creature.

Haruto "Ther- There's no way... y-yo-you possess one of those powers..."
