Chapter 81 - Chapter 80 — “Not Alone, By Choice”

Year: X784

Season: Early Summer

Location: Magnolia · Fairy Tail Guild → Lakeside House

Age:

Ren / Erza / Mira — 19

Lucy / Juvia — 17

---

Lucy — POV

Lucy learned three important things in her first full week at Fairy Tail.

First: chairs were optional.

Second: food was never safe.

Third—

Rent was terrifying.

She sat on the edge of the guild's balcony steps, parchment spread across her knees, brows knitted together as she counted and re-counted her coins.

"…This doesn't make sense," she muttered.

Happy hovered upside down in front of her. "Aye? You look sad."

"I'm not sad," Lucy said quickly. "I'm just—financially doomed."

Happy gasped dramatically. "Lucy is dying."

"I am not dying!"

But the truth sat heavy in her chest.

Magnolia rent was… not kind. And guild missions paid well—but not that well. Not yet.

She folded the parchment carefully and tucked it away, forcing a smile as laughter erupted behind her.

Everyone else looks so settled.

---

Ren — POV

Ren noticed immediately.

Not the paper.

Not the numbers.

The way Lucy sat slightly apart. The way her shoulders curled inward when the guild quieted instead of relaxing.

"…You're calculating again," he said, stopping beside her.

Lucy jumped. "I—wasn't—!"

She sighed, defeated. "…Okay, I was."

Ren leaned against the railing beside her, arms folded loosely. "What's wrong."

She hesitated.

Then exhaled. "Rent. I thought I could manage, but Magnolia's expensive and missions take time and I don't want to ask Master for help and—"

She stopped herself, cheeks heating.

Ren blinked. "…Why are you renting?"

Lucy frowned. "Because I need a place to live?"

Ren tilted his head slightly. "We already have a room ready for you."

Silence.

"…You what?"

---

Lucy — POV

Her brain stalled.

"A room," Ren repeated calmly. "At the house. It's been empty since it was finished. Furnished, too."

Lucy stared at him. "…You just… had one?"

Ren shrugged. "We planned for it."

"For me?"

"For whoever would need it," he corrected. "You just happen to be the one."

Her chest felt warm—and tight.

"…That's really kind," she said softly. "But I want to stand on my own feet."

Ren didn't argue immediately.

He studied her for a moment—really studied her—then spoke gently.

"That doesn't mean you have to live alone."

The words landed softly.

But they stayed.

---

Erza — POV

Erza watched from across the guild.

She didn't need to hear the conversation to understand its shape.

Lucy's posture shifted—not defensive, not stubborn. Thoughtful.

Good.

Erza approached, arms crossed. "You don't prove independence by suffering unnecessarily."

Lucy looked up, startled. "…I wasn't—"

"You chose to join the guild," Erza continued. "That means choosing support when it's offered."

Mira appeared beside them, smiling. "And it's not like you'd be freeloading. You'd still do missions. You'd still grow."

Juvia peeked from behind Mira, nodding vigorously. "Living together is very normal in Fairy Tail!"

Lucy laughed weakly. "You're all very convincing."

Ren allowed himself a small smile.

---

Juvia — POV

Juvia watched Lucy think.

That quiet moment where someone weighed pride against warmth.

"…Juvia thought she had to be alone too," she said softly. "But Fairy Tail teaches that loneliness is not strength."

Lucy looked at her.

Juvia smiled shyly. "Also… the house is very nice."

That did it.

Lucy laughed—bright, genuine—and nodded.

"…Okay," she said. "I'll move in."

---

The Move

It wasn't dramatic.

No grand announcement.

Just Lucy arriving at the lakeside house with a single suitcase, eyes wide as she took in the sunlight on the water, the quiet hum of enchantments beneath her feet.

"This is… peaceful," she whispered.

Ren nodded. "It's meant to be."

Mira helped her unpack. Juvia immediately claimed half the closet "temporarily." Erza inspected the locks and windows like a general preparing for siege.

Lucy stood in the doorway of her room—simple, warm, waiting.

"…You really prepared this," she murmured.

Ren leaned against the frame. "You were always going to need somewhere to land."

Lucy met his eyes.

"…Thank you."

Not just for the room.

For the choice.

---

That Night — Lucy

Lucy lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling.

Not unfamiliar. Not borrowed.

Mine.

She listened to muffled voices down the hall—Natsu and Gray arguing, Mira laughing, Erza telling them to keep it down.

For the first time since leaving home—

She didn't feel like she was running.

She turned onto her side, fingers brushing the cosmos pendant.

"…I'm not alone," she whispered.

And for once—

That didn't scare her.
