Chapter 56 - Volume 14: Conquest Without War. Chapter 2: The Whisper of a Myth

Dawn over Gaipan had a different color.

Before the White Lotus, the light always fell on the village lazily, filtering through crooked roofs, rotten planks, and dry dust that accumulated in every corner.

Now… it was different.

The new walls of fresh wood reflected the orange of the sun.

The roads were leveled.

The roofs were patched.

The beams were reinforced.

But what had really changed wasn't the architecture.

It was the whisper.

Gaipan awoke talking.

And every word carried a name.

Ren.

Ren.

Ren.

Hero.

Miracle.

Guardian.

White light.

A myth that had grown in just a few days.

Ren walked along the edge of the makeshift market, hands clasped behind his back, observing without intervening: the natural flow of the people, the conversations, the gestures, the glances that stopped on him only to light up with devotion.

Azula walked to his left, evaluating everything with hawk-like eyes.

Suki, a few steps behind, with a mix of pride and nervousness in her gaze.

But Ren… Ren didn't see admiration.

He saw brute force.

Social force.

The most dangerous.

The most useful.

And Gaipan was producing it for free.

An old woman, leaning on a cane, leaned toward some young women as he passed.

—"I can't believe it! It's white fire!" she whispered with childlike excitement. "Fire that doesn't burn! Fire that transforms! Have you heard of the two-faced warrior? They say he's sent by the spirits!"

Ren heard every word without needing to strain.

The rumors surrounded him like wind.

—"They say he healed the little boy with the broken leg just by touching him…"

—"He fought Fire Nation men all by himself…"

—"He's half spirit, half man…"

—"They say his group doesn't answer to the Fire Nation, but to him."

—"He is the White Lotus."

—"He is… hope."

Suki tensed, blushing slightly upon hearing so much devotion.

Azula let out a dry laugh.

—"Hope." What a ridiculous… concept," she murmured with a lopsided smile. "But convenient."

Ren stopped in front of a stall where two merchants were arguing enthusiastically.

The younger one said:

—"Gaipan came back because they arrived. If the White Lotus went north, to the towns on the Jang Hui road… things would get better there too!"

—"Exactly!" the other replied. "There are already people who want to leave to follow them. Can you imagine!"

Ren narrowed his eyes.

A golden thread glinted in them.

Perfect.

He leaned slightly toward Azula.

—"Did you hear?" he asked in a low voice.

—"I heard it before I came here," she replied. "Your 'followers' already believe your group is the solution to every misery in the Earth Kingdom. Pathetic… but useful."

Suki frowned.

—"They're not followers… they're just grateful. Ren saved their lives. It's normal for them to want to help him."

Azula looked at her with a thin smile.

—"Oh, Suki. Gratitude is just the first phase.

—"What comes after is obedience."

Suki opened her mouth to retort, but Ren raised a hand to soothe both of them.

—"Enough," he said. "Arguing doesn't speed up expansion. Observe."

He approached a group of villagers talking loudly.

Upon seeing him, they fell silent immediately.

Ren offered a serene smile, perfectly calculated.

—"I heard what you were saying," he said in a calm voice. "About the nearby villages."

The villagers lowered their heads shyly, though one dared to speak.

—"Lord Ren… we were just saying that… well, it would be a miracle if you went to other places too."

—"Gaipan wasn't the only abandoned village—"

—"Nor the only one suffering attacks—"

—"Nor the only one that needs help—"

They stumbled over each other.

Ren raised a hand, soft.

—"I understand. And I'm glad to know your people feel hope again.

But… —his gaze deepened, as if he were seeing beyond all of them—

many of you are already carrying stories of Gaipan to other places, aren't you?"

The villagers looked at each other, surprised that he knew.

—"Our families live in other villages…"

—"Our children travel to sell fish…"

—"The merchants come and go…"

Ren nodded.

—"Good," he whispered. "Then I need you to keep talking.

About what you saw.

About what you accomplished together.

About what we built."

An excited murmur erupted among them.

Ren continued, soft, hypnotic:

—"But don't exaggerate.

Don't invent miracles.

The truth is enough.

Say that we rebuilt Gaipan with work, discipline, and unity.

That the White Lotus doesn't subjugate villages, it elevates them."

Azula watched in silence.

Her eyes burned with a mix of fascination and hunger.

Suki pressed her hands against her chest.

The villagers listened with absolute devotion.

—"Say," Ren concluded, his voice deep,

"that I go where I am needed."

That was all.

And it was enough.

The group of villagers began to converse with fervor:

about neighboring villages, about trade routes, about places ruined by wars or local corruption.

Ren turned to Azula and Suki with a calm that only he could maintain in the midst of so much emotion.

—"We don't need to chase the Earth Kingdom," he said.

"We'll make them come to us.

Gaipan will be our banner, our first beacon.

And the rumor-mongers… our silent army."

Azula crossed her arms.

—"I should be irritated that you can manipulate masses with a few words.

But, honestly… —her lips curved with dark delight—

it excites me a little."

Suki blushed violently.

Ren pretended not to hear.

—"With these rumors," he continued, "we'll have access to entire villages without raising suspicion.

They themselves will ask us to intervene.

And when they do…

the markets, the routes, and the leaders will be within our reach."

Azula took a step toward him.

—"How long until we take the south?"

Ren smiled.

—"Less than a year… if we tend the seeds well."

Suki took a deep breath.

—"Then… is it time to leave Gaipan?"

Ren looked at her.

His expression softened slightly.

—"Yes.

Our work here is done.

The Earth Kingdom is calling us."

The wind blew hard, carrying the rumors over the river, down the dirt roads, in the direction of the villages that didn't yet know that, in a matter of weeks, they would be willing to kneel before a new symbol:

The White Lotus.

And Ren advanced toward the horizon, knowing that every voice that named him… was another brick in his future empire.

Author's Note: Hey guys, sorry for the delay, I still haven't been able to fix my laptop problem, so I ask for a little patience. But I hope that regularity will return next week. For now, here is the chapter I owe you.
