I froze mid-step, my chest tightening as his voice sliced through the air behind me.
"What are you doing here, Lila?"
The name hit me like a hammer. My blood ran cold. I turned slowly, and there he was—Alexander. Calm, composed, but the sharpness in his tone made the air feel heavier. My mind raced, panic bubbling in my stomach. He was already here… and he had heard everything.
Before I could even think of stepping back, she—Lila—spun around with a laugh that grated on my nerves, all flashy smiles and careless energy.
"Oh honey poo, why the cold shoulder? I missed you so much!"
And just like that, she ran across the room, arms outstretched, and jumped into his chest. The sound of their collision—her laughing, his slight catch of breath—made my stomach drop. I gasped, feeling like the floor might vanish beneath me. What the hell is happening here?
Alexander's voice softened, almost unrecognizably, as he replied to her. "Ally… why didn't you come to the airport to see me?"
"I was busy, you know that," she said, her tone teasing and light, like nothing serious was happening.
"But that's not how you should react around your girlfriend," he countered, the calm edge in his voice now mingling with a subtle undertone of frustration. "Didn't you miss me?"
I couldn't breathe. My body felt frozen, my mind trying to untangle the impossible. Her… his… girlfriend? My chest tightened so violently I thought I might collapse. My legs wanted to move, wanted to run, but my body refused. I just stood there, anchored by disbelief, wishing I could disappear into the shadows.
She was his girl… and I couldn't even bring myself to form the words in my mind. The reality of the situation slammed into me like a freight train, leaving my thoughts scattered, my heart hammering, and my entire world tilted on its axis.
I stayed rooted to the spot, my hands gripping my handbag like a lifeline. Every laugh, every soft word between them, felt like a dagger twisting in my chest. My mind screamed, Calm… just calm… but my heart was in chaos.
I couldn't let him see me break. Not here, not now. Not when everything depended on keeping my cover intact. So I forced my shoulders down, took a slow, deliberate breath, and let my eyes wander across the room—anything to distract myself from the impossible scene in front of me.
Alexander held her effortlessly, his posture perfect, like he'd been doing this his entire life. But there was a subtle difference, something I hadn't noticed before: a flicker of annoyance behind his controlled expression whenever she teased him. That tiny micro-expression… it was human, real. And for some reason, noticing that sent a wave of heat through me, confusing me even more.
Lila was all energy and brightness, twirling slightly in his arms like she owned the world, laughing at every small joke he made. I noticed how easily she leaned into him, how comfortable she was with his presence. It made my chest tighten further.
I told myself I had no right to feel anything—this wasn't about me. This was about staying alive, staying in control, and watching carefully. And yet… I couldn't help the sharp pang in my chest, the feeling that I'd just stumbled into a part of his life I wasn't meant to touch.
Trying to steady myself, I let my gaze drop to the floor, subtly angling my body so I wasn't directly in their line of sight. I whispered to myself under my breath, You're still Evie. Focus. Observe. Learn. Every flick of his wrist, every curve of his smile, every slight shift in posture… it all mattered. Everything here could teach me something.
And as I watched, a strange clarity settled over me. Yes, Lila had him in this moment, but I knew Alexander better than anyone. He was always controlled, always precise. That soft flicker of annoyance? That was something I could read. That was something no one else would notice.
I straightened my back and let a tiny smirk form, almost imperceptible, as I whispered again, This… isn't over. Not by a long shot.
I didn't move from my spot, but my mind was already working, calculating the next steps, finding the edges in this new dynamic. I'd let her play her game for now… but I knew how to navigate Alexander. I had to. For everything that still needed to happen.
I had been standing there, almost frozen in place, my mind racing, when I felt it—a subtle shift in the air. Alexander's head turned slightly, just enough for his sharp gaze to sweep across the room. And then, like a quiet shockwave, his eyes landed on me.
For a moment, the world seemed to shrink. The chatter, the laughter, even Lila's teasing vanished from my senses. His eyes—cold, precise, unyielding—met mine, and something unspoken passed between us. I didn't flinch, though my pulse sped up in a way I couldn't quite hide.
He raised an eyebrow, that perfect, almost imperceptible sign that he was intrigued, measuring, analyzing. My chest tightened, but I straightened my shoulders and let my expression remain neutral. Calm, collected… Evie. Always Evie.
"Evie," he said finally, his voice low and controlled, cutting through the room without needing to raise it. The single word carried weight, a mixture of recognition and quiet curiosity.
"Alexander," I replied evenly, careful to keep my tone natural, like I hadn't just spent the last few minutes watching him with her in his arms.
He didn't move toward me immediately, didn't speak further. Instead, he tilted his head, eyes scanning me from a distance as if weighing whether I was here by accident—or by design. That silent assessment… it made my stomach knot, a mix of thrill and tension that I hadn't expected.
"You're still here" he said finally, almost a statement, not a question. His lips curved slightly, but only enough to suggest intrigue, not amusement.
"I like to understand the room I'm in," I said smoothly, keeping my gaze steady. "Especially when there's… unexpected company."
His eyes flicked toward Lila for a fraction of a second, then back to me. The corner of his mouth quirked, barely noticeable. "Hmph. You always notice more than others do."
I held his gaze, letting the faintest trace of a smirk curl on my lips. "It's nothing"
The tension hung in the air, electric yet unspoken. I could feel his presence—cold, controlled, yet somehow warmer than usual—pressing against the edges of my composure. I didn't move, didn't speak, just let the silence stretch, knowing he was calculating me, just as I was calculating him.
For the first time that evening, I realized something dangerous. I wasn't just observing him. I was part of the game now. And Alexander… Alexander had noticed me.
"But yeah if you may excuse l guess l better get going, there is something l have to do. Also nice meeting you Miss Lila." I bowed and immediately got out of there.
I turned a little bit behind to see if he was still looking but he was.....
