Chapter 121 - 214 The Selection

Seeing the Abe Clan's retainers draw their swords against Chen Chen, the surrounding Sorcerers assumed another battle was about to erupt. They crossed their arms, eager to watch the spectacle unfold.

Just then,

*Clap.*

A single clap echoed in the minds of every Sorcerer present, as if it had been struck within their own heads. Without the slightest warning, the crowd that had been buzzing with anticipation for the next spectacle suddenly grew still, their gazes unanimously turning toward the raised platform in the square.

The platform, originally built for ceremonial rituals, now bore a slender figure.

It was a Caucasian woman, her hands still raised from the clap.

She wore a simple yellow robe, her bald head framing a face of pure, pale beauty. A gentle smile played on her lips as she floated above the ground, standing on a magical array.

"The... Ancient One?"

The Ancient One, Master of Kamar-Taj, Guardian of the Three Sanctuaries, and the foremost practitioner of White Magic in the modern era.

She embodied the ultimate authority of the magical world.

As the Ancient One appeared, the previous clamor of hushed whispers abruptly fell silent.

*Click, click, click.* The Ancient One landed lightly on the ground and began walking step by step toward Chen Chen, the epicenter of the conflict.

*This looks like she's about to punish Chen Chen!*

*The Ancient One has always been a guardian of order. Even though Chen Chen is her disciple, causing such a disturbance during the Sorcerer Supreme's succession ceremony will surely earn him a severe punishment, even as her personal apprentice.*

As the Ancient One drew closer to Chen Chen, the onlookers couldn't help but think. Glancing at Abe Seiya, who lay unconscious on the ground, the Ancient One sighed and turned to Chen Chen. "Chen Chen, couldn't you have been a little more restrained? Every time you make such a huge mess, I have to clean up after you."

"I was already controlling my power. Otherwise, Abe Seiya would have been reduced to dust, or at the very least, shredded meat," Chen Chen replied with an air of nonchalance, lazily flicking his ear and raising an eyebrow.

"Young Master, I know you've already gained control, but you should still be mindful of your surroundings. After all, the aftershocks of each of your battles are like the sky is being torn apart. You could have easily subdued this little guy with a single ordinary move, avoiding any unnecessary collateral damage. Yet you insisted on prolonging the fight. Do you know how troublesome it is for me to clean up the mess every time?"

"Alright, alright. I'll try to be more careful in the future."

The two continued their conversation as if no one else was around. The sorcerers listening nearby grew increasingly astonished, their eyes filled with deep curiosity. This was completely different from what they had imagined. They had expected the Ancient One to fly into a rage and banish Chen Chen and the Abe Clan from Kamar-Taj for causing trouble. Instead, she was now casually chatting with Chen Chen about everyday matters.

Moreover, their dialogue was peculiar. According to official records, Chen Chen was the Ancient One's newest disciple. As his master, she should have expected him to show her due respect. Yet their conversation resembled that between a master and his butler, with Chen Chen playing the master and the Ancient One acting as the butler.

"Let's not dwell on this any longer. If we don't start the opening ceremony soon, we'll miss the appointed time with the three White Magic Gods."

After glancing at the bizarre, sigil-marked instruments hanging in the plaza, Gu Yi said softly to Chen Chen, "As for these members of the Abe Clan, you can leave them for now. I'll deal with their matters with their family head later."

She paused, and a golden-orange magic circle suddenly materialized beneath her, lifting her into the air and carrying her toward the raised platform.

Seeing the Ancient One's departure, the other sorcerers followed suit.

"Let's go too," Kazusa said, looping her arm around Chen Chen and drawing him closer to the platform.

Left behind were the three Abe Clan retainers, still frozen in their sword-drawing stances, and the unconscious Abe Haruya.

"It is a great honor to welcome so many sorcerers from across the world to Kamar-Taj today. Of course, I believe you all know what we are about to do."

Looking around at the predominantly young faces of the sorcerers below, the Ancient One spoke in a calm, measured voice, "Today, I will step down as Sorcerer Supreme. The Three Ancient Cosmic Entities—Agamotto, Oshtur, and Hoggoth, the very sources of the Vishanti's power—will select the next Sorcerer Supreme. This is an exceedingly rare opportunity; if you miss it, the next ceremony might not occur for a thousand years."

"Let me reiterate one thing: The title of Sorcerer Supreme is not merely an honor or a source of power, nor simply a chance to wield immense strength. It is, above all, a responsibility—a profound duty to defend the magical side of Earth. To bear this title means you will always stand at the forefront of battle against formidable enemies. I hope you all keep this in mind."

The Ancient One's words lacked rhetorical flair or impassioned rhetoric, yet they resonated deeply with the assembly. Many sorcerers present were not from Kamar-Taj and struggled to grasp the crushing weight of constantly facing extra-dimensional threats and cosmic overlords like Dormammu.

Most people couldn't grasp the terrifying weight of responsibility this position carried. The Sorcerers gathered here were either seeking thrills, fulfilling obligations, trying to prove themselves, or hoping to gain the Vishanti's power as the Sorcerer Supreme. As for the burden of protecting the magical world? Looking at the faces of these young people, who could truly bear it?

Watching the Ancient One on the stage, Chen Chen couldn't help but feel a pang of sorrow. Those who, like her, truly cared for the world were becoming increasingly rare. He finally understood why the Ancient One had wanted him to succeed her as the Sorcerer Supreme. In terms of ability, there was truly no one else who could measure up.

"I now declare the selection process for the new Sorcerer Supreme officially underway!"

An overwhelmingly powerful energy erupted from the Ancient One, a force so immense that none of the Sorcerers present had ever felt anything like it.

"Even if my entire clan of ancient elders were to mobilize, they wouldn't stand a chance against this level of magical power!"

"Terrifying! The Ancient One is a Sorcerer like us, yet the gap in power is so vast."
