Chapter 4 - Friend or foe ? A thin line in-between

Sunny froze... He thought he could outsmart the witness, but it was unsuccessful. If the thing was able to perceive so many things, the possibility of it being able to detect whether someone was lying to him wasn't off the table. Sunny also had a hunch that the creature had already deduced his flaw from his earlier interactions, as the pain he was subjected to when he wasn't responding wasn't easily read from him, but just a small let-off was enough for the creature to catch one. Before long the said pain arrived, forcing Sunny to answer.

"I bear his lineage."

The Great Titan frowned or at least did an action similar to it.

"I see..."

Its voice resounding from the dark. Sunny wasn't expecting such a reaction. Weaver was hunted by both sides during the Doom War, but as the Witness said, he came from an age before that. Was he already corrupted when the war between the demons and gods happened? Perhaps he was. Instead of coming up with plausible theories of said reaction, he simply decided to ask, to not waste time on futile actions.

"What do you think of Weaver, Witness?"

A deep silence stretched across the ketch after these words left Sunny's mouth, but after a while he responded.

"If you are asking me whether I bear hatred towards the progeny of the Forgotten God...

I do not...

They never wronged me when I was still...

myself...

So why should I hate them just because they did something they believed was right...

But if you are asking about just Weaver...

I believe he was a bad conversation partner, at least when I talked to him, always lying and being so mysterious, so deplorable."

Sunny noticed a hint of sadness in the voice of the creature when it talked about its state, but soon his interest was piqued by something else. Did he just say that he talked with Weaver? Sunny suddenly forgot all about his situation and the fear he felt beforehand, those emotions being suppressed by his natural curiosity; he blurted out almost immediately.

"You talked with Weaver??"

The creature was taken by the sudden question, but nonetheless it responded.

"Ahh yes, I did, back when they were still Sacred and the dawn of the first human domain... I talked to them a few times or just once...

my memories from when I was human are hazy and messy.

so it's hard to recall details."

This time the sentiment in the Witness's voice wasn't just a subtle detail, hard to notice. Instead, it was pretty obvious that recalling his memories was painful for it. That's why Sunny didn't want to ask it more questions, afraid that doing so would put him on the wrong side of the Great Titan or even push it to attack him. It was already a miracle that the Witness abstained from hurting Sunny; apparently, it found a miraculous way to restrain itself from most of the influence that corruption normally would hold on a nightmare creature. That was at least the theory that Sunny had. Nonetheless, Sunny was curious, so he asked one last question.

"What was Weaver like?"

There was a bit of silence before the Great Titan gave a response.

"You have their blood in your veins and yet you don't know much about them?

It's a bit sad, don't you think?

But after all it's Weaver we are talking about; they were always covered in a cape made out of secrets and mysteries..."

The creature frowned.

"The few times I sensed their emotions...

They were always worried, as they had an immense weight on their shoulders; there was also sadness and regret, but deep down in their souls there was a faint smell of hope...

I don't know what it was directed to, but this is what I know about Weaver."

Sunny had an inkling of what the reason for Weaver's worries was, and it was the creation of a world with new gods. He came to discover it while traveling the Dream Realm and acquiring Weaver's Will in Immortal City.

After this exchange silence fell. Sunny nor the witness talked; instead, they just stared at each other, assessing if one of them was going to try to kill the other. Time flew as the scene seemed to be frozen as if on a broken communicator. The 7 suns of the River of Time started to rise. When the first rays of light hit the surface of the water and the world changed from its black embrace into a painting of different shades of red and orange, the hoarse and otherworldly voice resounded once again.

"Ahh, it seems the morning has arrived. I think I will take my leave; I am not a fan of bright ambiances.

It was a pleasure talking with someone who is able to think... A long time has passed since the last time I had such privilege."

Sunny responded.

"Same goes for me, and thanks for the information about Weaver."

Even if he wasn't completely honest and had to grit his teeth while saying so, deep down he was still scared of the Witness, as the only thing he knew was that the creature had mastered the art of detection and that its powers probably revolved around mind attacks, and those were one of the most vicious ones. In this world there is nothing scarier than something unknown, so Sunny's nerves were not unnatural even for someone who called himself the heir of Death.

As the Witness started to move its body, the space around it started to change and bend as its body seemed to grow, but as it had never shrunk in the beginning, it was the Witness using his will to bend the world in his way. The creature had already spread its wings as it was ready to take off; instead, its face covered by the bone-white mask turned one last time at Sunny.

"I hope we meet again little Shadow.

The River of Time is vast; that is true, but I believe we are aiming for the same destination."

Having said that, the witness took off in the sky; after a while it seemed like a black dot in the sky, just like it was previously. Yet soon it disappeared the same way it had arrived—from nothing.

...

Sunny took a big breath, finally relieved that the creature had left him alone. He had been alert for days since that thing showed up, and now he was finally at ease to be alone. He lay abruptly on his back and looked at the sky with a dazed look. Soon his right hand found itself on his forehead, rubbing it.

"Did I just befriend a Great Titan?"

He asked the emptiness around him.
