Jason stopped pretending.
He didn't confront.
He cornered.
Zia realized it after school ,when he was already waiting by her car, arms crossed, expression calm in a way that felt rehearsed.
"You didn't tell me you'd be staying late,he said.
"I didn't know I had to,"Zia replied evenly.
Jason smiled. "I worry. "
She met his eyes. "You control. "
The word landed harder that she expected.
Jason's jaw tightened. "Care looks different to different people. "
Zia opened the car door." Then maybe we want different things. "
The silence that followed wasn't loud.
It was heavy.
Across the lot ,Christopher watched without meaning to.
He looked away when Jason glanced up---but the damage was done.
That evening, sofee spread her concern carefully.
Not rumors .
Questions.
"Do you think Zia 's okay ?"
"She's been....different. "
"Jason must be stressed. "
By the time the Questions reached Christopher, they sounded like accusations.
Leo found him near the lockers.
"They're circling, " Leo said quietly.
Christopher frowned. "Who ?"
Leo didn't answer. He didn't have to.
Later ,Zia sat alone in the library, books open,mind elsewhere.
Christopher approached slowly.
"Can I sit ?"
She nodded.
"I didn't mean to cause trouble, "he said.
Zia closed her book ." You didn't. "
A pause.
"I'm tired of being managed. "She added softly. Like my choices are a threat. "
Christopher swallowed. "You deserve better than that."
She looked at him then.Really looked.
"So do you ."
The words stayed with him long after they parted.
That night, Christopher stood in his room father's voice echoing from earlier that day---focus,reputation, discipline.
For the first time,he didn't feel guilty for wanting something else.
Across town,Zia stared at Jason's unanswered messages.
For the first time,she didn't rush to explain herself.
Silence had broken .
