Chapter 21 - A SIN TO REMEMBER

Chapter Twenty-One: The Marriage Begins to Listen.

The marriage started paying attention.

Not to words, but to what lived between them. To the pauses Ethan took before speaking. To the way Lila's answers arrived a second too late, as though she were returning from somewhere else before responding.

They moved through the house like careful strangers who knew too much about one another to pretend innocence. Ethan no longer reached for her without thinking. When he did, his hands hesitated, hovering as if unsure whether she still belonged to the same version of herself he married.

Lila noticed everything.

She noticed how he watched her reflections more than her face. How he studied her reactions instead of her expressions. Love had become observant. Suspicious. Quietly afraid.

One night, Ethan asked her a question that sounded harmless.

"Do you ever feel like we're borrowing time?"

Lila's chest tightened. She answered with a lie that sounded like honesty. He nodded, accepting it with a resignation that frightened her more than anger ever could.

Later, alone, Lila pressed her palm against the wall and felt the house hold its breath with her. She wondered when marriage stopped being a promise and became an agreement to endure.

She dreamed that night of corridors without doors. Of walking endlessly without choosing a direction. She woke knowing the marriage had learned something neither of them had said aloud.

It was listening now.

And it would remember everything.
