I had been rationing the first diary.
Not consciously at first — the discipline had begun as a survival mechanism, the understanding that reading it all at once would have been like trying to hold too much light, the details losing their specificity in the flood of them. But it had become something else over the months. A practice. The daily reaching toward her voice had shaped itself into something I needed the same way I needed the morning training and the evening hour with Damon in the tactical room — a rhythm that the days had organized themselves around without my fully choosing it.
I had known for two weeks that I was approaching the end of the first diary.
