The city ended where the steel fences began.
Beyond them lay the Outer Zones abandoned districts swallowed by fog, rubble, and things that no longer belonged to the human world. Mando stood at the checkpoint, staring past the barricades.
The air felt heavier here.
MANDO So this is… outside.
Kael checked the seals on his coat.
KAEL This is where training stops being safe.
Mando's gun rested at his side, unsummoned. For the first time since his awakening, his hands felt unsteady.
MANDO What are we hunting?
Kael didn't answer immediately.
KAEL A scout-class creature.Low threat. Supposedly.
That last word lingered.
They moved through broken streets, buildings half-collapsed, windows dark like hollow eyes. The silence wasn't empty, it felt alert.
Mando's senses stretched outward without him realizing it. His weapon hummed faintly, responding to something unseen.
MANDO (thought) It's reacting before I do…
Kael noticed.
KAEL Good. Let it warn you.Bad instincts get people killed out here.
A sound echoed.
Scraping.
Wet.
Close.
The creature emerged from beneath a collapsed bus, four legs, twisted spine, skin like cracked stone stretched over muscle. Its head split open vertically, revealing rows of pulsing light instead of eyes.
Mando froze.
MANDO That's… low threat?
Kael already had his weapon raised.
KAEL It used to be.
The creature screamed.
The sound hit like pressure, rattling Mando's teeth.
Mando summoned his gun.
It formed instantly, but the shape was wrong. The barrel elongated, the chamber overbuilt, unstable.
He fired.
The shot tore through the creature's shoulder but didn't stop it.
It lunged.
Mando stumbled back, heart racing.
MANDO It's not going down!
KAEL Then stop trying to overpower it.
The creature struck. Kael intercepted, his blade-gun flashing, carving into stone flesh.
KAEL Adapt!
Mando focused not on killing, but slowing.
The weapon shifted.
His next shot didn't pierce.
It rooted.
The bullet spread on impact, hardening into a crystallized mass that pinned the creature's leg to the ground.
The monster roared.
Kael finished it with a clean strike.
Silence returned.
Mando collapsed to one knee, breathing hard.
MANDO I thought… I thought I was ready.
Kael wiped his weapon clean.
KAEL You survived. That's all "ready" ever means.
He paused, then looked at the creature's corpse.
KAEL This thing shouldn't be here.
Mando frowned.
MANDO What does that mean?
Kael's expression darkened.
KAEL It means something bigger is moving.
On the walk back, neither of them spoke.
At the fence, Kael stopped.
KAEL From now on, training includes missions.Controlled exposure. Real stakes.
Mando nodded.
MANDO You're pushing me fast.
Kael met his eyes.
KAEL Because the world won't wait for you to catch up.
That night, Aysh waited in silence.
She smelled blood on Mando before he even spoke.
AYSH You went outside the city.
Mando hesitated.
MANDO…Yeah.
She hugged him too tightly.
AYSH Don't do that again without telling me.
Mando smiled faintly.
MANDO I'll be careful.
She didn't answer.
Later, alone, Aysh activated her communicator.
A hologram flickered to life, an emblem marked with a broken crown.
UNKNOWN: Outer Zone activity confirmed.UNKNOWN: Legendary class movement detected.
Aysh's breath caught.
AYSH (whisper) No… it's too early…
Far beyond the city, beneath cracked earth and ancient ruins, something massive shifted.
A low, distant roar echoed through the land.
The age of monsters had begun to stir again.
