OUCH! That one landed hard on Maia like a brick to the face.
"May I ask why?" she asked politely, though she felt far from it.
Ian's finger found his glasses, adjusting them on his well-chiselled nose. "Because you seemed like trouble," he said dryly. "One I wasn't interested in managing."
Maia barked a humourless laugh... but only in her mind. She couldn't believe her ears. She had spent years wondering why she kept getting rejected when she'd met every requirement needed.
And the reason was merely over his assumption?
Her voice came through with a slight irritation. "So why accept me now?"
"Because, unfortunately, you were the only applicant."
Hearing that hurt even worse. So if there had been literally anyone else, she would've been rejected again.
