Chapter 76 - Confirmation in the darken room

They were alone in the lift when they were back to hotel room, their reflections drawn close together in the mirrored walls, yet neither spoke. The words spoken on the rooftop still hung suspended in the air—neither fully settled nor fade away.

When the door open and they stepped inside, the room was quiet enough and they could only hear the low, steady hum of the air‑conditioner. Yeh entered first, setting her bag aside as if deliberately occupying herself to fill the silence. Lin lingered for a second by the threshold before stepping slowly in and closing the door behind her.

"Do you want to take shower first, or shall I?" Yeh asked, her tone returned to something ordinary and even.

"You go first," Lin replied.

Both of them had carefully drawn their feelings back in, striving to restore a balance that had only just been broken.

The routine of washing and changing stretched out longer than usual.

When Yeh finally came out of the bathroom, Lin was already in her pyjamas, sitting on the edge of the bed with her head bent over her phone. She looked up at the sound of movement, glanced briefly at Yeh, then quickly looked away again.

"Your turn," Yeh said.

Lin nodded, and as she stood up, they brushed past each other—so close she could catch the scent of fresh soap and warm skin rising from Yeh's hair and clothes. Neither paused, yet both were sharply aware of how charged that accidental proximity had felt.

The bathroom door closed, and soon the sound of running water filled the room. Yeh let out a soft breath and walked over to pull back one side of the duvet.

Lin returned some time later, her hair still damp at the ends. She saw Yeh already lie down, leaving plenty of space beside her.

"Shall I turn off the light?" she asked.

"Go ahead," came Yeh's voice, muffled slightly by the cover.

The room plunged into darkness the moment the light went out, lit only by the faint glow of the city filtering through the window. The mattress dipped gently as Lin lay down.

There was a small gap between them—close enough, yet far enough not to touch.

At first neither moved; the silence felt almost too complete. Yeh had expected to lie awake, yet her body felt strangely relaxed, while her mind remained startlingly clear. She was acutely aware of the presence beside her, even able to sense the rhythm of Lin's breathing.

After a while, Lin turned over softly, shifting just enough to narrow the space between them. Now they were near enough to feel the warmth radiating from each other.

Yeh's hand lay on top of the duvet; her fingers twitched involuntarily, stopping just before making contact. She held still, not reaching further.

Lin seemed to sense the hesitation. She did not move again, yet she did not pull away either, as if silently accepting and allowing this fragile closeness.

In the dark, their faces were hidden, but every sensation felt amplified.

"Yeh?" Lin's voice came very softly.

"Mm?"

"Everything you said tonight… did you mean it?"

She had asked it at last—not as an answer, but as confirmation.

Yeh did not reply immediately. She stared up at the ceiling, and after two seconds, whispered simply:

"Yes."

No explanation, no elaboration—just that single word, surer and heavier than any speech.

Silence fell again. Lin's breath caught for a heartbeat, then she slowly resumed its steady rhythm.

A long time passed before she spoke, the voice was so low and it was almost a murmur.

"I understand."

It was not a response, but a receiving of what had been said.

Yeh hummed quietly in acknowledgment, and let it rest. She had half‑expected to feel uneasy or disappointed by Lin's response, yet in that moment she felt a strange, deep calm—as if a weight she had carried for years had finally been set down.

As for what came next… there was enough time to wait.

Neither spoke again, nor did them shift away to widen the gap. That faint, lingering warmth remained where it was—never crossing a line, yet carrying them both far closer than before.
