Chapter 64 - Chapter 64: The Secretary’s Carp

"It's not easy," Lily said thoughtfully, tapping her chin, "but that still means there's a chance to communicate directly, right, Ren?"

Ren nodded.

"In theory, yes. Abilities and moves can be developed further."

He looked at them curiously.

"But why are you all so interested in telepathy?"

Ava blinked excitedly.

"You could talk to your Pokémon directly! Wouldn't that be amazing?"

Lily shook her finger dramatically.

"Your thinking is too simple, Ava."

Ava tilted her head.

"Then what?"

"Telepathy means silent communication," Lily explained confidently. "In battle, when you give commands out loud, your opponent hears everything."

"But if you give orders mentally?"

She spread her hands.

"They won't know your strategy at all."

Ava paused.

"…That actually makes sense."

Emma nodded slightly.

Liam also looked thoughtful.

Ren chuckled.

"The idea is clever."

"But telepathy is a Hidden Ability."

"Even within the Ralts line, only a small number have it."

"So drawing one intentionally? Very difficult."

Lily sighed.

"What a waste…"

Emma crossed her arms calmly.

"Strong Trainers don't rely on tricks like that."

Lily's face darkened.

"Excuse me?"

Emma's lips curved slightly.

"Luck won't always save you."

Lily clenched her fist.

If Emma hadn't drawn Lapras before—

This conversation would go very differently.

Ren quickly ignored the brewing tension.

Ava glanced at the time.

"Wow. We've been here over forty minutes."

Liam looked unwilling.

"I haven't drawn again yet."

"One Magikarp is enough for today," Ava replied firmly. "I haven't drawn anything at all."

Liam opened his mouth—

Then closed it.

He remembered who their father was.

Better not argue.

Soon, the four of them prepared to leave.

Lily and Emma followed.

"Come back anytime," Ren said with a smile as he saw them out.

The shop became quiet again.

---

8:00 PM

Lucas arrived.

"Ren, you said you wanted to talk?"

Ren poured tea for both of them.

"Yes. I need your help with something."

Lucas straightened slightly.

"If I can help, I will."

Ren spoke calmly.

"I plan to plant fruit trees across the city."

Lucas blinked.

"…Fruit trees?"

"Yes."

"I have a large number of saplings. I want to plant them throughout the city."

Lucas frowned slightly.

"How many are we talking about?"

Ren answered plainly.

"Conservatively. Three hundred thousand."

Lucas inhaled sharply.

Three hundred thousand trees?

"That's… building forests."

Ren nodded.

"My fruit trees are different from ordinary ones."

"They improve air quality."

"They're nutritious."

"They can be processed into energy cubes."

Lucas understood immediately.

"For Pokémon."

Ren smiled faintly.

"For both Pokémon and humans."

Lucas rubbed his forehead.

"Planting trees itself isn't a problem. Environmental projects are supported."

"But that amount of land…"

"All land is state-owned or collectively owned."

"Even planting trees must comply with land-use rights."

Ren nodded.

"So I'll need to speak with the city secretary directly."

Lucas hesitated.

"…Our city secretary's surname is Ruan."

Ren paused.

Then everything clicked.

No wonder.

Strict upbringing.

Disciplined siblings.

The Ruan family.

Meanwhile – Ruan Residence

Ruan Jianrong stepped into the living room after returning home.

He suddenly stopped.

"…What is that?"

In the fish tank—

A large red fish swam clumsily among his elegant goldfish.

He leaned closer.

"It's… a carp?"

But something felt off.

The eyes were unusually round.

The whiskers were long.

And it had an expression that looked permanently stunned.

"Ava. Liam."

Both siblings stepped out of their rooms.

"Yes, Dad?"

"Why has the voltage been unstable lately?" he asked, glancing at the flickering ceiling light.

Ava stiffened slightly.

Elekid had been sneaking electricity again.

She would deal with that later.

Ruan Jianrong pointed at the tank.

"You bought this?"

Liam nodded calmly.

"I saw it being sold on the way home. It looked… spirited."

Ruan Jianrong stared at Magikarp's vacant eyes.

"…Spirited?"

"This fish looks dull. And ugly."

Liam froze.

Ava tried not to laugh.

Ruan Jianrong shook his head.

"It's too big and ruins the look of the tank."

Then he said casually—

"Tell your mother to stew it tomorrow."

"Should be enough for two days."

Ava's eyes widened.

Liam's face went pale.

Stew…?

Magikarp blinked slowly in the tank.

Splash.

It flopped weakly against the glass.

As if sensing danger.

Liam swallowed.

Tomorrow—

He would have to defend his Pokémon's life.
