Chapter 13 - Lumos, But Make It a Problem

Charms class was smaller.

Ravenclaw shared it with Hufflepuff, which meant the general vibe was polite curiosity mixed with mild anxiety. The classroom itself felt warmer than Transfiguration—sunlight filtering through tall windows, desks arranged neatly, and an unmistakable buzz of magic in the air.

Then Professor Filius Flitwick hopped up onto his stack of books.

"Good morning, class!" he said cheerfully, voice high but confident. "I am Professor Flitwick, your Charms instructor—and a former Duelling Champion."

A ripple of excitement ran through the room.

Alexander's eyebrows lifted.

Okay. Respect.

Flitwick beamed. "Charms require precision, timing, and clarity of intent. Not power but control."

Alexander nodded.

That sounded familiar.

They opened their textbooks, flipping to the first chapter. Flitwick walked them through wand grip, pronunciation, and intent, occasionally hopping from book to book so everyone could see him clearly.

"Our first charm," Flitwick announced, "is the Wand-Lighting Charm."

He flicked his wand.

"Lumos."

A soft white light bloomed at the tip.

"Simple," he said. "But simplicity does not mean carelessness."

The students tried.

Some wands sparked.

Some fizzled.

One just… did nothing.

Alexander waited, watching, then lifted his wand.

"Lumos."

The light appeared—steady, clean, bright.

Flitwick gasped.

"Oh! Oh my—excellent form!" He clapped his hands. "Ten points to Ravenclaw!"

Alexander smiled faintly and leaned toward Cho.

"Relax your wrist," he murmured. "You're pushing the magic instead of guiding it."

She tried again.

"Lumos."

Her wand lit up.

Cho's face lit up, too. "Yes!"

Flitwick applauded again. "Splendid! Truly splendid!"

Alexander, however, was already bored.

He stared at the light on his wand.

What if…

He adjusted his focus slightly.

The light brightened—almost like a miniature sun.

Several students shielded their eyes.

Flitwick blinked. "…Oh my."

Alexander tilted his wand.

The light dimmed. Softer. Controlled.

Then—

The color shifted.

White became pale blue.

Then—

Green.

The room went dead silent.

Professor Flitwick froze.

In one smooth motion, he dropped into a dueling stance, wand up, eyes sharp.

"—Who cast that?" he demanded.

Alexander raised his wand slightly. "Still Lumos."

Flitwick paused.

Stepped closer.

Studied the glow.

"…Merlin's beard," he whispered.

He straightened, laughter bubbling out of him. "A color-modified Lumos! Extraordinary control!"

The room exploded with whispers.

"Tem—no—twenty more points to Ravenclaw!" Flitwick said happily. "But—" his voice sharpened just a touch, "Do not use green. It resembles a curse. Causes… misunderstandings."

Alexander nodded. "Makes sense."

Hands shot up around the room.

"Can we learn that?"

"How did you do it?"

"Is that advanced?"

Flitwick chuckled nervously. "Ah—no, no, not today. Best to master the standard charm first."

Alexander leaned back, uninterested.

The bell rang.

Students packed up quickly, buzzing with excitement, some glancing at Alexander with awe, others with suspicion.

As they left, Flitwick watched Alexander carefully, a smile still on his face.

A wonderful student, he thought.

Merlin, help us all if he decides to misbehave.

Alexander walked out humming, Cho hurrying to keep up.

Two classes in.

And Hogwarts was already struggling to keep up with him.
