Chapter 18 - 18. Preparation

Establishing a new company requires a good location.

Hell's Kitchen was not a place where she could recruit people, so despite the high rent, Daisy gritted her teeth and rented two offices in Midtown as the company's base.

At the same time, she posted recruitment ads online, hiring a few college students to work for her, helping her write code.

Big data doesn't have many barriers; if you have an idea, you can do it.

Daisy's advantage lay in her knowledge of future development trends, combined with her predecessor's computer expertise, allowing her to write an algorithm that would surpass current standards for the next three to five years.

By the time others realized the business opportunity and were preparing to chop wood for rafts and build boats, she was already driving a speedboat—that was her advantage.

Daisy worked for three days herself, setting up the framework, and then handed over the content enrichment to the college students.

The students didn't realize how important this analysis algorithm was, and their work was subpar. They constantly negotiated, asking for days off, office entertainment, and a relaxed work environment, which infuriated Daisy.

"Huh?" Walking into her office in a huff, she opened her computer to clear her inbox and found a new email.

It was a job application from a David Lieberman, a graduate of the State University of New York. According to his self-introduction, he had extensive experience in software, but Daisy looked at it from every angle and felt he was bragging. The achievements he listed all used words like "assisted" and "supported," clearly indicating he was just a helper.

However, Daisy decided to give him a chance because she remembered David Lieberman as an analyst for the National Security Agency, a future friend of Frank Castle, codenamed "Microchip." He shouldn't have been unable to find a job, so why would he apply to her makeshift company?

Was there some conspiracy targeting her? She decided to meet David Lieberman.

The two met in a coffee shop.

Daisy looked at his appearance with some confusion: "Mr. Lieberman, how old are you?"

"Twenty-six."

He answered with a somewhat startling number. Daisy looked at his old face, his full beard, and the wrinkles on his forehead—he had aged too quickly!

She re-examined his identification and resume; they were authentic and accurate. He was indeed twenty-six. She felt much more at ease. This guy had just left school, was very dull, and most likely hadn't even joined the National Security Agency yet.

The two chatted casually, and Daisy realized that he was similar to her current state: solid fundamentals but not flexible enough in his thinking.

Although David Lieberman had never heard of big data, he enjoyed analyzing complex data, believing he could find his personal value within it.

Among the vast sea of job postings, he immediately spotted Daisy's recruitment. Now, in conversation, he found that many of her ideas directly articulated what he had been thinking but hadn't fully understood.

His first impression of Daisy was that despite her youth and lack of high academic qualifications, she possessed extraordinary insight.

Daisy also thought David was good. After all, he was someone who could be hired by the National Security Agency, a talent in the computer field, and at least someone she could afford to hire.

"Mr. Lieberman, in my opinion, you are very capable. Why would you come to my company?" She couldn't help but ask that extra question at the end.

The big-bearded man looked a bit distressed, grumbling for a long time before explaining the situation: his wife was pregnant with their second child, and their elder daughter was still young. A pregnant woman couldn't be left alone, so his workplace couldn't be too far from home. Fortunately, Daisy's office was just across the street from his house.

She had nothing to say to this family-oriented, wife-loving engineer.

David Lieberman had a very good personality, almost to the point of being weak.

In the original timeline, when he couldn't show his face, he entrusted his good friend Frank Castle to help out with a few small things at his house.

Unexpectedly, over time, the tall and imposing Frank and his wife developed feelings for each other. The two even kissed a few times in the house.

Everything was done except the final step, and at that time, David Lieberman was sitting behind the monitor watching it all unfold.

He didn't shoot Frank but chose to drink in silence and eventually forgave both of them... He was truly the number one ninja in the Marvel world. Daisy welcomed such a good-tempered employee with open arms. If he could tolerate that, then withholding salary shouldn't be a problem, right?

The two quickly finalized the contract. David Lieberman would serve as the technical director, participating in the management of big data's later research and development.

Daisy explained the development progress and discussed future plans, and David Lieberman immediately started working.

She didn't forget her self-sufficient retainer. Miss Maki Matsumoto, as an informant, had the secret task of monitoring the others and serving as legal counsel for her company.

Miss Maki felt very insecure. Daisy taught her the karate she had just learned. It must be said that this person, who would become Lady Bullseye in the original timeline, had excellent physical fitness and learned incredibly fast. If Daisy hadn't enhanced her body, she wouldn't have been able to beat her.

The company's premises, computer equipment, servers—everything was rented. The college students also signed short-term employment contracts. David Lieberman's requested salary wasn't high so he could go home often, and his retainer, Maki Matsumoto, didn't even ask for a salary.

Her company was extremely frugal. Even so, the one hundred thousand dollars in her bank account was visibly shrinking, and the development progress was only a quarter complete.

Everyday expenses were cut wherever possible.

While strict with the company, she wasn't stingy with herself. Daisy bought a used Ford, continued practicing karate and marksmanship in her free time, and indulged in big meals at restaurants, living a life of utter contentment.

When only a few thousand dollars remained of the one hundred thousand, a basic big data algorithm was completed.

The algorithm was lengthy and far from refined. Daisy locked herself away to optimize it and then ran it on the rented server.

In this era, everyone's information protection was extremely rudimentary. Much user information was available for her to access freely, as if unprotected.

The algorithm ran very effectively.

Development was complete; the next step was to persuade customers to pay.

Many brilliant ideas and innovations were ultimately eliminated by this financial city. Was it because they weren't good enough? No, it was simply because they weren't good at selling their products.

Daisy was a nobody. Going to large corporations to negotiate and expect to be taken seriously was simply a pipe dream. The technical guy David and the retainer Maki were a bit out of their depth. She needed an assistant.

Returning to her old profession, she hacked a network of cameras, found her target, and monitored them for two days. Only then did she put a pistol in her back waistband and go to recruit them... This was an upscale residence in the Upper East Side. She had observed the target for two days, finding that they lived a reclusive life, so she personally went to recruit them.

She didn't use the front door; she rattled open the window lock and slipped in through the window.

Like many villains, she sat on the sofa in the shadows, waiting for the person to arrive.
