Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Deeper Rewards

The second floor of the Great Labyrinth smelled of wet stone, rust, and the faint copper tang of old blood. The wide cavern of the first level had narrowed into twisting tunnels lit by clusters of pale blue mushrooms that pulsed like slow heartbeats. The air grew cooler, heavier; distant echoes carried the scrape of claws on rock and the low, guttural snarls of things that weren't human.

Alex led the way, longsword drawn and steady in his grip. Kaelith flanked his right—tail low and alert, ears swiveling at every sound, claws already extended and gleaming. Mara brought up the rear, hands faintly glowing with the soft green of her healing magic, eyes wide and shining with manic excitement.

They had cleared two small packs of goblins on the way down quick, and bloody work that left copper coins and a few rusted knives in their pouches. Nothing worth celebrating yet. But the stairwell to the third floor had been guarded by a single oversized dire rat, nearly the size of a wolf, fur matted with filth, yellow teeth bared in a hiss. Kaelith had torn its throat out in one leap, laughing as hot blood sprayed across her chest.

Now they moved deeper.

"Third floor's supposed to have orcs," Alex said quietly, voice carrying just enough for the two women to hear. "They are bigger, meaner and will provide better loot. The vendor's guide also said they drop iron weapons sometimes—good steel if we're lucky."

Kaelith's ears flicked forward. "I smell them already. Sweat, iron and anger." Her tail lashed once. "They're close."

Mara pressed closer to Alex's back, fingers brushing his arm. "Hero… if anyone gets hurt, I can heal. Just don't die on me. I want to watch you both come back covered in blood and fuck like animals."

Alex shot her a dark grin over his shoulder. "Keep talking like that and we'll skip the loot and fuck right here."

Kaelith growled low, pleased. "Focus, master. I want shiny things first."

They rounded a bend and the tunnel opened into a rough-hewn chamber. Three orcs stood around a crude fire pit broad-shouldered, green-skinned, and tusks jutting from under heavy brows. They wore mismatched armor: dented iron plates strapped over leather, crude axes and spiked clubs in meaty fists. A small pile of loot lay near the fire sacks of grain, a few copper ingots, and a short sword with a nicked blade.

The moment the orcs spotted them they roared and charged.

Kaelith met the first one head-on.

She ducked under a swinging club, drove her shoulder into the orc's gut, and lifted, muscles bulging as she hurled the brute into the wall with bone-crunching force. Before it could recover, she was on it, claws raking across its throat, tearing through leather and flesh in a spray of dark blood.

Alex took the second orc. The creature swung a massive axe; Alex parried with his longsword, sparks flying then stepped inside the reach and drove his blade upward under the ribs. The orc gurgled, eyes wide, and toppled.

The third orc hesitated, then roared and charged Mara.

Mara squeaked, hands flaring green but before it reached her Kaelith was there.

She leaped, tail whipping for balance landed on the orc's back, and sank claws into its shoulders. The beast bellowed, flailing; Kaelith rode it like a bucking horse, twisting her body and driving one clawed hand straight through the back of its neck. The orc dropped to its knees, then face-first into the dirt.

Silence fell, broken only by dripping blood and the crackle of the dying fire.

Kaelith stood over the corpse, chest heaving, and claws dripping. Her torn rags were soaked dark with gore; sweat and blood gleamed on tawny fur. She licked a streak of red from her lips, amber eyes glowing in the mushroom-light.

Alex sheathed his sword and stepped close. He grabbed her by the collar, yanked her into a bruising kiss, tasting iron and heat. She growled into his mouth, claws digging into his shoulders, tail wrapping around his waist to pull him tighter.

"Fucking beautiful," he muttered against her lips.

Mara rushed forward, pressing herself between them, kissing Kaelith's blood-streaked cheek, then Alex's jaw. "You're both so strong… so perfect…"

Kaelith rumbled with a pleased, predatory sound and nuzzled Mara's neck before turning back to the loot pile.

Alex crouched beside the fire. The orcs' haul was better than the goblins': twenty silver coins, three copper ingots (sellable to smiths), a short sword with decent balance (iron, not rusted), a small pouch of dried meat, and most importantly a dull red crystal the size of a fist. It pulsed faintly with inner light.

"Fire shard," Mara breathed, eyes wide. "I've heard of them. Alchemists pay good gold for these; they are used for enchantments or potions. That's… fifty silver at least. Maybe more."

Alex hefted the crystal. Warm to the touch. "First real drop. Good start."

Kaelith crouched beside him, tail swishing. "Deeper?"

"Yes, we will go deeper," Alex agreed. "But first—we rest here. Safe zone runes are glowing on the walls. Ten minutes, then, we head to the fourth floor."

They settled near the fire. Kaelith sat cross-legged, licking blood from her claws with slow, deliberate strokes, eyes never leaving Alex. Mara curled against her side, head on Kaelith's shoulder, manic smile soft and dreamy.

Alex leaned back against the wall, sword across his knees. "This place… it's old," he said quietly. "Older than Eldoria. The guide said the Labyrinth's been here since before the city walls went up. Some say it's alive—feeds on blood and greed, spits out treasure to lure more fools in. Others say it was built by gods or demons to test mortals. Either way, the deeper you go, the stranger it gets."

Kaelith's ears flicked. "I like it. Smells like opportunity. And death."

Mara giggled. "We'll be rich soon, hero. Then we can buy a bigger bed. More girls. More collars."

Alex chuckled low. "One step at a time. Fourth floor next. Stay sharp."

After ten minutes the runes on the walls pulsed brighter, signaling the safe zone was ending. They rose, weapons ready.

Kaelith cracked her knuckles. "Let's kill more."

They descended the rough-hewn stairwell narrow, and slick with moss into darkness broken only by the glow of more fungi.

The fourth floor was colder. The tunnels tighter. Echoes sharper.

And the first thing they met was a pair of armored skeletons rusted mail, swords in bony fists, and empty sockets glowing with sickly green light.

Kaelith charged without hesitation.

She slammed into the first skeleton, claws tearing through rusted mail like paper. Bone shattered; the creature collapsed in a heap of clattering ivory. The second swung at her; she ducked, tail whipping around to knock its legs out, then drove claws up through its ribcage and ripped outward, bones flying.

Alex finished the downed one with a single downward thrust, sword piercing skull and crushing it.

More skeletons clattered from side tunnels four, then six.

The fight was fast and brutal.

Kaelith danced through them like a storm of claws and fury tearing limbs, crushing skulls, tail lashing to trip and stun. Alex moved beside her his sword flashing, precise cuts severing spines and necks. Mara darted between them, green light flaring whenever a bone blade grazed skin, healing shallow cuts in seconds.

When the last skeleton crumbled, the floor was littered with broken bone and rusted metal.

And in the center where the pack leader had stood, a small iron-bound chest.

Alex knelt, pried it open with his sword tip.

Inside: thirty silver coins, a pair of steel bracers etched with faint runes, a vial of shimmering blue liquid (mana potion, Mara identified excitedly), and a short sword with a blade of dark, almost black iron, perfect balance, with faint red glow along the edge.

"Blood iron," Mara whispered. "These look enchanted, they will C=cuts deeper and make them bleed for longer. Worth at least two gold."

Kaelith's tail thumped hard against the stone. "Good haul."

Alex handed her the blood iron sword. "Yours. You earned it."

Kaelith took it reverently, tested the weight, swung once, air hissing. Her grin widened flashing her sharp canines.

"Time to go back," Alex said. "Sell this shit and buy real armor. Eat, fuck and then come back tomorrow for more."

Mara clapped her hands, manic delight shining in her eyes. "Yes! Richer already. And hornier."

Kaelith growled low pleased, and hungry. "Lead the way, master. I want to celebrate properly."

They retraced their steps up the stairs, through safe zones, past goblin corpses already dissolving into faint sparks and emerged into Eldoria's late-afternoon sun.

The city greeted them with noise and life, merchants hawking wares, adventurers comparing loot, the distant clang of forges. They were bloodied, richer, and stronger.

And the Labyrinth waited below deeper floors, bigger monsters, and better treasure.

Alex looked at his women, Kaelith licking blood from her new blade, Mara pressed between them, smiling like the world was hers and felt the hunger grow.

This was just the beginning.
