BWDC:SDDK Chapter 13: Public Security Mission · Toto Bank

"Uh, I walked over? What's wrong?"

Ren Ichimonji blinked, looking visibly innocent.

He didn't know what was wrong with these people. Was his walking too quiet, or did these people simply not pay attention to nearby footsteps?

Previously, when he walked up behind Kaito Kuroba on the Queen Selizabeth, Kaito was startled. Last night, when he walked up behind Conan, Conan had a stress response. Now, walking up behind Ran Mouri and Sonoko Suzuki, they were exactly the same.

It was too strange... The people of Beika Town were practically born with the "Perfect Victim" constitution for being snuck up on—the kind where being flanked causes an automatic one-second stun.

"Strange, I didn't hear any footsteps at all..." Ran Mouri whispered.

She shifted her gaze toward the young man who could appear behind her so stealthily. He had to be a master-level figure.

How should she put it? He looked a bit familiar. Simple clothes, a very eye-catching face, and eyes that seemed to hide some sort of secret.

"Ah! You're Batman!"

Before Ran could remember who he was, Sonoko Suzuki had already blurted it out loudly.

Immediately, Ran froze.

...Batman? Wasn't that a character from a comic book? She recalled her experience on the Queen Selizabeth yesterday. After being knocked out by Phantom Thief Kid, she had woken up outside the banquet hall, close to the shore. This boy had seemingly been nearby at the time, just looking at the Tokyo pier in the distance.

Until the very end, she hadn't said a single word to him. She knew nothing about this "nickname," which left her heart full of confusion.

However, despite her confusion, Ran carefully pulled at the corner of Sonoko's jacket and whispered, "Sonoko, don't do that. Isn't it a bit hurtful to call someone by a nickname like that?"

"Eh? Really?" Sonoko was taken aback.

But she remembered that when Ren Ichimonji first met her, he had introduced himself as Batman... Hmm, was he allowed to call himself that, but she wasn't allowed to follow suit?

Watching the two high school girls whispering to each other, three question marks practically appeared over Ren's head.

What are they doing? What are they even talking about? I just came to ask for directions; there's no need to discuss it for this long, right?

And... hey, why did my system panel light up?

With a thought, the system light screen—visible only to him—opened immediately. This time, the content was quite concise and clear.

[Detected a violent incident nearby endangering the public security of Gotham City!]

[As Batman, you have the duty to maintain Gotham's security. Please proceed quickly to the incident location and capture the criminal before they flee the scene, or stop the criminal in the middle of the crime!]

[Difficulty: Medium. Reward for completion: 50 Points!]

A... mission?

Ren scanned the contents of the screen and let it close naturally. This was the reason he wanted to get in touch with Conan. Inside Beika Town, if a violent incident was "about to happen," "currently happening," or "had already happened" within a certain range, the system would automatically generate a daily security mission with rewards.

There were no punishments for failing these missions. Since even the real Batman couldn't stop every single violent incident in Gotham, he, as the system-appointed Batman, wouldn't be held to such strict requirements either.

"If it's this position..."

Ren looked up toward the direction the mission marker was pointing. Just then, he heard Ran Mouri's cry of alarm.

"Ah, oh no! I forgot to go and withdraw the check Dad asked me to help exchange!"

Ren: ?

You guys really don't treat me like a stranger, do you?

He turned to look at Ran, who finally realized someone was standing next to her. She said apologetically, "I'm sorry, Mr. Batman... Are you going to Toto Bank?"

"I happen to be going to Toto Bank too. How about I take you there?"

Ren looked at the direction of the mission marker again and asked in a low voice, "Excuse me, Miss Mouri, where is Toto Bank? Please point it out for me..."

Before he could finish, Sonoko Suzuki had already pointed out the location of Toto Bank.

As expected, the direction of the Toto Bank Beika Park Branch was exactly where the mission marker was pointing! Beika Town was truly a land of "outstanding people"—bank robberies were a common occurrence. He had run into one right on time!

"Let's give it a try," Ren muttered.

He immediately began running toward Toto Bank. He pressed a button on the hidden compartment of the Bat-utility belt at his waist. Instantly, a conspicuous white coffee cup appeared out of thin air in his hand. The compartment snapped shut automatically after the cup appeared.

The Dark Knight of Beika Town held the coffee cup to his lips.

Ren couldn't handle this mission himself. However, Batman could—the real Batman could.

But drinking from the coffee cup only granted an effect lasting a short one minute. If Ren couldn't use the Batman state to deal with all the bank robbers within sixty seconds, then forget about saving people—he himself would fall into a dangerous situation.

Therefore... he needed to see the situation at Toto Bank first. Only after spotting the robbers would he drink the coffee. Under most circumstances, one minute was enough for Batman to handle ordinary criminals!

Watching Ren's retreating back as he ran toward Toto Bank, Ran Mouri was somewhat surprised. She looked blankly at her best friend and asked, "Mr. Batman seems to be in a hurry?"

Sonoko Suzuki blinked. She stroked her chin, exercising her powerful reasoning skills as the Queen of Deduction.

"Well, in the comics, Batman is a millionaire with a company, right? Maybe he has some business dispute and is in a hurry to transfer funds?"

Of course, she didn't remember any Batman being Asian or using a name from a mysterious great Eastern country. The second young lady of the Suzuki Financial Group thought for a moment, then her eyes lit up.

"Anyway, won't we know if we follow him and see?"

"Besides, Ran, you're on the way to pick up the check for the old man anyway, right? It's on the way!"

And, she also wanted to see exactly what this Mr. Ren Ichimonji, who called himself Batman, was up to! Her parents and sister always said she had poor judgment and that none of the boyfriends she liked were good people. This time, she was going to prove her eye for talent!

"Hehe, Ran, let's go, let's go!" Sonoko giggled as she pulled Ran toward Toto Bank.

A short while after the two friends left the volleyball gym, the "God of Death" elementary student arrived, clutching a skateboard that had been snapped into two pieces. Panting, he looked up and said:

"Go... let's go inside and look..."

"Ran and Sonoko should still be inside, right?"
