Chapter 27 - The Council’s Retaliation

The aftermath of the raid on the surveillance hub sent shockwaves through Chaos Realm High School. By the next morning, the school was abuzz with rumors. Students whispered in the hallways, their voices a mix of awe and fear.

"Did you hear? Someone hit the surveillance hub."

"They say it was a group of B-rankers."

"The council's furious. I heard they're bringing in enforcers from the A-rank tower."

In the B-rank dormitory, Akira and his team gathered in their room, the weight of their actions pressing down on them.

"We've got their attention now," Rika said, pacing the length of the room. Her barrier flickered faintly, a visible sign of her nervous energy. "They're not going to let this slide."

"Good," Kazuki said, leaning back against the wall with his trademark grin. "Let them come. We'll be ready."

Lian crossed her arms, her expression skeptical. "You're acting like we won a war. All we did was disrupt their surveillance. The council's not going to let this go—they'll come down on us with everything they've got."

"She's right," Mira said, her shadowy Sigil flickering faintly. "This isn't a victory. It's a declaration of war. And we've just painted a giant target on our backs."

Akira sat at the edge of his bed, his flaming blade resting across his lap. "Then we keep moving. The raid was just the first step. We've shown the school that the council isn't untouchable. Now we need to build on that momentum."

Rika stopped pacing, turning to face him. "How? We can't take on the entire council alone."

"We won't be alone," Akira said, meeting her gaze. "We need to rally more students to our side. If we can turn the school against the council, they won't be able to maintain their hold."

By midday, the council made its first move.

A booming voice echoed through the school's announcement system, chillingly familiar in its cold authority.

"This is the council. Last night, an act of treason was committed against the order and stability of Chaos Realm High School. The individuals responsible will be found and brought to justice. Effective immediately, increased patrols will be deployed across all ranks. Any student found harboring traitors will face expulsion."

The message left no room for interpretation. The council was tightening its grip.

As the team ventured out into the school, the increased presence of enforcers was immediately apparent. A-rank students clad in crimson-and-black blazers patrolled the hallways, their Sigils flaring as they scanned the students passing by.

"We can't stay out here for long," Mira said, her voice low. "They're actively searching for us."

Kazuki smirked. "Let them. We're ghosts, remember?"

"Ghosts with a spotlight on us," Rika muttered.

As they turned a corner, a group of enforcers appeared, their leader stepping forward. His golden Sigil pulsed around him, radiating an intimidating aura.

"You," he said, his gaze locking on Akira. "Stop right there."

Akira's flames flickered faintly as he clenched his fists. "Keep walking," he muttered to the team.

"What do we do if they follow?" Rika whispered.

"Then we deal with them," Akira said.

Before the enforcers could act, a sharp whistle cut through the tension. From a nearby corridor, Hana emerged, her shadowy Sigil flickering like a second skin.

"Looking for someone?" she asked, her tone casual but laced with defiance.

The enforcer leader frowned. "Stay out of this, Hana. It doesn't concern you."

"Doesn't it?" she replied, stepping between the enforcers and Akira's team. "Seems to me you're wasting your time harassing random students while the real threats are out there causing chaos."

The leader hesitated, his Sigil pulsing faintly as he weighed his options.

"Fine," he said finally, his tone begrudging. "But don't think you can protect them forever."

The enforcers turned and walked away, their presence lingering like a shadow.

Hana turned to Akira, her teal eyes sharp. "You owe me one."

Akira nodded, his flames dimming. "Thanks."

"Don't thank me yet," she said. "The council's been cooking up something fierce. You need to move carefully."

That evening, the resistance gathered in the abandoned classroom once more, the tension thicker than ever.

"We can't keep running," Rika said, her frustration clear. "Sooner or later, they'll find us."

"Which is why we need to rally the students," Akira said. "We need to give them something to fight for."

Kazuki leaned forward, sparks dancing along his fingers. "You're thinking another strike?"

"Not just a strike," Akira said. "A message. Something that shows the entire school what the council is hiding."

Mira nodded. "If we can expose their secrets—like what we found in the hidden chamber—it could turn the tide."

"How do we get that information out without the council shutting it down?" Lian asked.

Akira's gaze shifted to the glowing holographic map on the table. "We take control of their broadcast system. If we can hijack it, we can show the school everything—the vault, the Sigils, the truth about the boundary."

Rika frowned. "That's even riskier than the surveillance hub."

"It's a risk we have to take," Akira said, his voice steady.

Kazuki grinned. "Count me in. Let's give the council something to watch."

Mira's gaze was sharp, but there was a flicker of approval in her eyes. "It'll take precision. We'll need to move fast and strike hard."

Lian sighed but nodded. "If we're doing this, we'd better do it right."

As the team began to plan their next move, Akira felt a spark of hope. The council was strong, but they weren't invincible.

And it felt like the school was starting to believe it.
