Aunt Lai looked up. If it were the past, she would have started picking through his goods by now, but today she really wasn't in the mood.
"You're getting older now. Do you plan to keep living like this forever?" she asked.
Lai San chuckled. "Auntie, isn't it fine like this? I don't have to pay taxes, and I don't have to serve the corvée. I might not have a fixed home, but the best part is that I don't have to worry about anything.
"Auntie, I know what you're going to say, but I think this is perfectly fine. As long as I'm fed, nobody in my family starves. Otherwise, even if you managed to find me a wife, I wouldn't have the means to support a family."
After saying that, he smiled at his cousins standing behind her. "If my brothers here have any happy occasions, as their cousin, I can still chip in a gift."
This was the absolute most he could offer, and even then, the gift would be rather meager.
