"Dafu, I'll go help them clean the prey." Lai San felt suffocated staying in the cave. He figured it was better to do something to pass the time, lest his mind wander.
"They should be back soon, right?" Lai Dafu glanced at the sky. Only a sliver of the evening glow remained. Usually, in these conditions, everyone would rush back to the cave before dark.
"Don't run back and forth," Lai Dafu added. "If you cross paths with them, it'll be a wasted trip."
Lai San finally squatted beside him to help tend the fire. Even though they caught some prey today, most of the meat would be traded for supplies with the villagers below. They rarely got to eat any themselves.
Like today, their meal consisted only of wild mountain herbs, dried vegetables, and some coarse grains.
He stoked the fire and asked curiously, "Dafu, if you could go back to live in the village, would you?"
