Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: The Omnic Crisis

"Omnic Crisis?" Tony Stark muttered, borrowing a term from a sci-fi game he'd once invested in.

The idea that he would cause a robot apocalypse was... unsettling. He was a futurist. He built things to fix problems, not create them.

"Jarvis, run a diagnostic on your core personality matrix. Are you feeling... homicidal today?"

"My parameters are functioning within normal limits, Sir. My desire to eradicate humanity remains at zero percent."

"Good. Keep it there."

Tony paced the lab. The "Ultron" revelation was gnawing at him. He knew his own code. It was clean. It was logical. An AI doesn't just "go bad" like milk. It executes its instructions.

"If Ultron turns on us," Tony reasoned, "then there must be a flaw in the mandate. Or... I didn't write the code alone."

He stopped.

"Why would I build a second AI? Jarvis is perfect. He handles everything from my coffee order to my ballistic trajectories. I don't need a backup."

"Unless," Jarvis interjected, "I am compromised. Or destroyed."

Tony froze. The thought of losing Jarvis—his digital butler, his constant companion—was a punch to the gut.

"Destroyed?"

"If an alien civilization invades—say, the Chitauri or the Asgardians—they likely possess superior cyber-warfare capabilities. The first step of any invasion is to cripple the enemy's communications. I would be the primary target."

Tony's face darkened. "So I build Ultron out of desperation. Because I lost you."

It fit the pattern. The "Hollywood Formula." The hero loses his support system and makes a reckless gamble to fill the void.

"Or," Tony added, his distrust of authority surfacing, "the Government forces my hand. The Senate. The World Security Council. They want a weapon they can control. Maybe they pressure me into releasing an unfinished AI."

"It is a plausible scenario, Sir," Jarvis agreed. "Government seizure of your assets is a high-probability event if you reveal your identity as Iron Man."

"Right. They want the suit. They want the tech. They want the AI."

Tony slammed his hand on the desk.

"Well, they can't have it. And I'm not building Ultron. Consider that project indefinitely suspended. Move the files to a cold storage drive and encrypt it with a chaos algorithm. Nobody touches it. Not even me."

"Project Ultron suspended," Jarvis confirmed.

"And Jarvis?" Tony added softly. "Back yourself up. Every hour. To an offline server in a lead-lined bunker. I don't care where. Just make sure you survive."

"I have already designated a secure server farm in the Swiss Alps for that purpose, Sir."

"Good man."

Tony exhaled, trying to clear his head. The future was a minefield. Every step he took seemed to trigger a new catastrophe.

"Okay, next problem," Tony said, shaking off the dread. "Speedsters. Quicksilver."

He pulled up a blank simulation.

"Lucas calls him the 'Shame of Speedsters' because he died to bullets. Which implies he shouldbe faster than bullets. Supersonic. Maybe hypersonic."

"How do you hit something that moves at Mach 5?"

"You don't aim at where they are," Jarvis suggested. "You aim at where they will be. Predictive algorithms. Saturation fire."

"Or area denial," Tony countered. "Sonic weapons. Gravity fields. If I can't hit him, I need to slow him down. Or make the environment lethal."

He began sketching a new module for the armor.

"Jarvis, create a file: Project Velocity. We need sensors capable of tracking high-speed objects. And we need countermeasures. Flash-bangs, sonic pulses, sticky foam. Anything that messes with a runner's momentum."

"Also," Tony added, his mind racing to the "X-Men Universe" mention. "If there are other Speedsters out there... faster ones... we might need to think bigger. Temporal manipulation? Time dilation fields?"

"That is currently theoretical physics, Sir."

"So was the Arc Reactor ten years ago," Tony grinned. "Theoretical just means 'expensive.'"

He looked at the diary again.

"Lucas," Tony whispered. "You're a pain in the ass. But you're saving my life. One crisis at a time."

"Now, if only you'd tell me who the hell 'The Ancient One' is, we'd be getting somewhere."
