Chapter 17
Ema's
I looked at Lily as she sat beside me on the cold concrete of the stair step. She stayed close enough that our shoulders almost touched, but after she told me her name, she didn't say much else. She just sat there with a quiet, calm energy. She watched the empty hallway with that same soft smile on her face. It felt like she was waiting for something to happen, or perhaps she was just enjoying the silence as much as I was.
For a few minutes, neither of us spoke. The only sound was the distant noise of students in the cafeteria and the faint hum of the school's ventilation system. It was nice to have someone sit with me without asking a hundred questions. After a long moment, Lily stood up and brushed off her skirt. She slipped her hands into the pockets of her jacket and turned to look down at me.
"I've got class now," she said in a light, cheerful voice. "I hope we meet again, Ema."
