Chapter 15 - Chapter 15:- Schemes

But while this was happening, there was someone watching all of it from far away—hidden in the shadows of the trees near the cabin.

Tae-joon, the 20-year-old tenant who rented a room in Mi-Kyung's house, Hyun-woo's close friend. He had followed them here, driven by a mix of curiosity and jealousy that had been building for months.

He had always wanted Mi-Kyung—her kindness, her beauty, the way she smiled at him when he helped around the house. But now, seeing her naked with Min-seok, vowing to always be there for him, anger boiled inside him. His fists clenched.

'That's supposed to be me,' he thought, rage twisting his face. 'She's mine. How could she choose him?' He watched them sleep, his heart burning, then slipped away into the night, vowing to himself he wouldn't let this go.

In the year that had passed since Mi-Kyung first started her efforts to heal Min-seok, a lot had changed in her life—and everyone around her noticed.

At first, her kids saw the small shifts. Ha-yeon, the 23-year-old nurse, was the first to pick up on it. She came home late from shifts and noticed her mom smiling more—humming while cooking, staying out a little later some evenings. "Mom… you seem happier," she said one night over dinner. "Is there someone?"

Mi-Kyung blushed and nodded, telling them about Min-seok—a kind man who had helped her at the salon. Ha-yeon was cautious at first—the age gap worried her—but seeing her mom's eyes light up when she talked about him, she softened. "As long as he treats you right, Mom. You deserve happiness too."

Eun-seo, the 18-year-old high school student, was excited. She loved romance stories and teased her mom gently. "He sounds sweet! Does he make you laugh?"

When Mi-Kyung said yes, Eun-seo grinned. "Then I like him already." She noticed how her mom put more effort into her looks—new dresses, a fresh haircut—and felt happy her mom was living for herself again.

Hyun-woo, the 20-year-old university student, was protective. "Who is this guy? Is he good enough for you?" He asked questions, but after meeting Min-seok once at the house, he relaxed.

"He seems solid, Mom. Just… be careful." He noticed the change in the house too—more laughter, less worry about bills since Min-seok had handled the landlord issue.

Tae-joon, the tenant and Hyun-woo's friend, noticed everything. He saw Mi-Kyung leave more often, and come back with a glow on her face. He heard her laugh on the phone. Jealousy grew inside him. He had always liked her—her gentle smile, the way she treated him like family. He thought he had time to win her over.

But now, seeing her change, he felt angry and hurt. "Who's this guy she's seeing?" he asked Hyun-woo one day. Hyun-woo shrugged. "Some dude who helped Mom at the salon. Seems nice." Tae-joon fumed inside but smiled. "Good for her." Deep down, he hated it.

Over the year, Mi-Kyung's devotion to Min-seok showed in everything. She learned his likes from his family, surprised him with small gifts, listened when he needed to talk (even if he rarely did), and gave him space when he pulled away. Her kids saw her happier, more alive. The tenant saw her slipping away—and it fueled his obsession. By the time he followed them to the cabin, his anger had turned dark.

Tae-joon had been restless all night after watching Mi-Kyung and Min-seok at the cabin. The next morning, he found Hyun-woo alone in the kitchen, eating cereal.

Hyun-woo looked up. "You okay, man? You look like you didn't sleep."

Tae-joon sat across from him, forcing a casual tone. "Yeah… just thinking. Hey, uh… about your mom and that guy Min-seok. Are you really okay with it? I mean… he's like 23, right? And your mom's… what, 35? That's a big age gap. Doesn't it feel… weird?"

Hyun-woo paused, spoon halfway to his mouth. "I mean… yeah, it's a gap. But he seems decent. Mom's happy. She smiles more now."

Tae-joon leaned in, voice low. "Sure, but… you sure he's not taking advantage? Older women sometimes get lonely after being alone for years. Guys like him know that. They act nice, say all the right things… but what if he's just using her? What if he leaves when he gets bored? Or worse… what if he's got some dark side? You really trust a guy that age with your mom?"

Hyun-woo frowned, spoon lowering. "I… I don't know. He helped her with the landlord thing. He's been good to her."

Tae-joon shrugged, planting the seed deeper. "Just saying… be careful. She's your mom. You don't want her getting hurt. And with that age difference… people will talk. She might get judged. You sure he's not manipulating her?"

Hyun-woo stared at his bowl, suddenly unsure. "I'll… I'll talk to her."

Tae-joon hid his smirk. "Yeah. You should."

The next day, Mi-Kyung woke up first. Sunlight filtered through the cabin window. Min-seok was still asleep beside her, face peaceful, arm draped over her waist. She smiled softly, brushing his hair back.

She carefully slipped out of his arms, found their clothes scattered on the floor, and dressed him gently—sliding his boxers and pants back on, buttoning his shirt with careful fingers, even smoothing his hair. She kissed his forehead lightly before dressing herself.

When he stirred, she guided his head back to her lap. "Sleep a little more," she whispered. "I've got you."

He smiled sleepily, nuzzling into her thigh. They stayed like that for a while—her stroking his hair, him dozing peacefully. Eventually he woke fully, looking up at her with soft eyes.

"Morning," he murmured.

She leaned down and kissed him gently. "Morning, my love."

They shared a sweet, lingering kiss—slow, full of quiet happiness. Then they packed up, held hands the whole drive home, and talked softly about nothing and everything.

When Mi-Kyung walked into the house, she found Hyun-woo, Ha-yeon, and Eun-seo waiting in the living room. Tae-joon stood off to the side, arms crossed. The atmosphere was tense.

Ha-yeon spoke first. "Mom… we need to talk about Min-seok."

Mi-Kyung's smile faded. "What about him?"

Hyun-woo stepped forward. "We just… we're worried. The age gap is huge. He's only 23. What if he's taking advantage of you? What if he's not who he says he is?"

Eun-seo added hesitantly, "We heard he's… aggressive. That he has anger issues. What if he hurts you?"

Tae-joon jumped in, voice smooth but sharp. "Yeah, and he's always around. Seems too good to be true. Maybe he's manipulating you. You've been alone for so long… lonely people sometimes fall for the wrong guy."

Mi-Kyung's face hardened. She looked at each of them, then at Tae-joon last. Her voice was calm but steel.

"Stop. All of you."

She stepped forward. "First—Min-seok saved me from being raped. He risked everything to protect me that night. He covered me, held me, stayed with me all night so I wouldn't have nightmares. He's been nothing but kind and gentle since. He's never once raised his voice at me. Never pressured me. Never manipulated me."

She looked at her kids. "The age gap? Yes, it's there. But love doesn't care about numbers. He sees me—not my age, not my past. He sees me. And I see him. He's the best man I've ever known."

She turned to Tae-joon. "And you… don't pretend you're concerned for me. I know you've been talking to them. I know you've been feeding them lies. I'm not stupid."

Tae-joon smirked. "I'm just looking out—"

Mi-Kyung cut him off. "No. You're jealous. And I'm done pretending. This is my life. I raised you three alone after your father died. I worked, I cried, I stayed strong for you. I never interfered in your lives. I never told you who to love or who to date. So don't you dare tell me who I can love now."

Her voice rose, anger and hurt mixing. "I'm not a child. I'm not blind. I know exactly who Min-seok is. And I love him. If you can't accept that, then that's on you. But don't you ever—ever—speak ill of him again."

She looked at her kids, softer now but still firm. "If you still don't believe me… fine. I'll invite him over this Sunday. You can meet him properly. See for yourselves who he is. But until then—enough."

She turned to Tae-joon, eyes cold. "And you… get out of my sight. I don't want to see you right now."

She walked to her room, slamming the door behind her.

Tae-joon's face twisted with rage. He waited until the others left, then followed her. He pushed the door open without knocking.

Mi-Kyung was in the middle of changing—blouse half-unbuttoned. She spun around, startled.

"Tae-joon! Get out!"

He shut the door behind him, stepping closer. "Why him? Why that guy? I've been here for you. I've helped you. I love you. I've loved you for years. Why him? He's nothing. He's just some—"

Mi-Kyung's eyes flashed with fury. She slapped him hard across the face.

"Get out!" she shouted.

He lunged at her, grabbing her arms. "You're mine! You—"

Mi-Kyung kneed him hard in the groin. He doubled over, gasping. She shoved him back with all her strength, making him stumble.

"This is your final warning," she said, voice shaking with rage. "If you ever touch me again, if you ever badmouth Min-seok again, you pack your bags and leave. I want nothing to do with you. Don't call me. Don't talk to me. Stay away. If you know what's best for you, stay out of this. Or I'll call the police."

Tae-joon straightened, still wincing, but smirking. "And say what? You have no proof. No one will believe you. They'll just see your dirty little affair with a man twelve years younger. Your reputation will be ruined. I'm a nobody? I've got money. I'll walk away clean. You'll be the one who looks like a—"

Mi-Kyung smiled coldly. She pointed to her phone on the dresser—screen facing them, recording light on.

"See that?" she said. "It's been recording since the moment you stepped in. I had a feeling… the way my kids suddenly turned against Min-seok after being fine with him yesterday. Someone was feeding them lies. I thought it was you. But I needed proof. So I started recording while I changed—thinking if you came in, you'd give yourself away. And you did."

Tae-joon's face paled.

Mi-Kyung stepped closer, voice low and deadly. "Now I have evidence. If you try anything—if you sabotage this relationship, if you badmouth him again—I'll make this clip go viral.

And even if you're rich, your life will be ruined. No one will touch you after this. So get out. If you know what's best for you—stay away. Forever."

Tae-joon stared at the phone, then at her. His smirk was gone. He backed away slowly, opened the door, and left without another word.

Mi-Kyung locked the door behind him, hands shaking. She leaned against it, breathing hard.

Then she walked to her bed, sat down, and let out a long, shaky breath.

She was done being afraid. She was done letting anyone hurt the man she loved.

She picked up her phone, stopped the recording, and saved it safely.

Then she smiled—small, fierce, determined.

She was going to protect Min-seok. No matter what.
