Soon, a refreshed Han Shaoqing and the four Wu Shihao brothers walked out of the clothing store.
These suits felt a bit old-fashioned to Han Shaoqing, but they were quite popular in this era.
After spending some time together, Wu Shihao found that his big brother Han Shaoqing was easy to get along with. He relaxed and, along with his three brothers, bought a bunch of things, occasionally introducing Han Shaoqing to the situation in Xiangjiang.
Han Shaoqing only bought two sets for convenience. He also had the shop owner tailor a few new styles of clothing for later, to be picked up in a while.
After a carefree shopping spree and a satisfying meal, Wu Shihao enthusiastically led Han Shaoqing back to Kowloon Walled City.
The standard of living in this era was naturally incomparable to the 21st century.
Everywhere were tenement buildings, and many small stalls were set up along the streets.
"Ah Hao, you've struck it rich!"
"I knew this young man, Ah Hao, had potential."
"Ah Hao, you've made a fortune! Remember to treat Sister San to a meal!"
"Definitely next time. I'll take my friend upstairs first. We'll talk later, Sister San."
Wu Shihao greeted the familiar faces on the street, and it was clear he was well-liked.
Han Shaoqing looked around at the Kowloon Walled City, which often appeared in Hong Kong movies. Being here in person gave him a different kind of feeling.
The Kowloon Walled City was a lawless zone, only 2.8 hectares in area, with a population exceeding twenty thousand. It was one of the most densely populated places in the world.
There were dilapidated stairwells, unmaintained, stinking drainage ditches, and people from all walks of life on the streets and in the alleys.
Heroin, gambling dens, and brothels were everywhere, creating extreme chaos.
The impression it gave was one of being dirty, messy, and poor.
However, the rent was the cheapest in Xiangjiang, so many people who had stowed away chose to live here.
This was a slum, also a place that consumed fortunes.
In this kind of place, where good and bad people were mixed together, there were naturally plenty of gangsters.
Han Shaoqing followed Wu Shihao into the Kowloon Walled City and quickly noticed some unfriendly gazes falling on him.
Wu Shihao carried a money box and a few bags, explaining as he walked, "In Kowloon Walled City, the biggest faction is the Chaozhou Gang. It's not very peaceful at night; people often go missing…"
In fact, it wasn't just at night that it wasn't peaceful; it was never peaceful at all.
Han Shaoqing, with empty hands, didn't pay attention to the gazes of those around him. Listening to Wu Shihao's explanation, his gaze swept over the ground and above.
The Kowloon Walled City was a place of filth and squalor. Garbage littered the ground, and the air was thick with a foul stench. Some residents, lacking any sense of decency, simply dumped their dirty bathwater from the upper floors, adding to the cacophony of noise that constantly filled the air.
Turning a corner, they saw a group of thugs beating someone up and extorting money.
Han Shaoqing and Wu Shihao didn't want any trouble, but the thugs noticed Wu Shihao's suitcase, exchanged a look, and then approached them.
"Move it, you mutt."
Han Shaoqing didn't want to cause trouble, but that didn't mean he was afraid. He glanced at the group and then dismissed them from his mind.
"You little punk, you've got a lot of nerve talking to me like that."
The leader was called Mad Dog. Others called him Mad Dog or Dog Bro; he was a small-time leader in the Chaozhou Gang.
Currently, the main figures in the Chaozhou Gang were Hua Zai Rong, Fatty Chao, Gong Zai Qiang, and Big Grizzly Bear.
The Mad Dog in front was a lackey under Fatty Chao, usually collecting protection money in Kowloon Walled City, bullying men and women. He was ruthless, and had several lives on his hands. Everyone called him Brother Dog on the surface, but secretly called him Mad Dog.
Mad Dog obviously had his eyes on the box in Wu Shihao's hands. He kicked away the man they had just bullied, put the baseball bat on his shoulder, struck a pose he thought was cool, and said flippantly, "Leave the box, and you can go."
"Brother Dog, give us some face. We're all Chaozhou people, we're all on the same side."
Wu Shihao handed the box to Ya Qi and stepped forward to speak.
Mad Dog glanced at Wu Shihao and slapped him across the face.
Wu Shihao had practiced a bit of martial arts, and reacted quickly, stepping back to avoid Mad Dog's slap.
Feeling that he had lost face in front of his underlings, Mad Dog was furious: "You dare to dodge, I'll let you dodge."
Saying this, he swung the baseball bat and smashed it towards Wu Shihao's head.
Wu Shihao still wanted to de-escalate the situation, not wanting to make a big deal out of it. He kept giving ground, but Han Shaoqing wouldn't indulge this mad dog. He strode forward, single-handedly grabbing the falling baseball bat, and looked coldly at Mad Dog. "What's your name?"
"Mad Dog, what do you want?"
Mad Dog was still acting tough at first, but after yanking on the bat, he found he couldn't budge it an inch, even with all his strength. He knew he'd run into a tough opponent and quickly brought up his backer. "My big brother is Fatty Chao."
Han Shaoqing laughed. "So it's Mad Dog, huh? You dare to touch my brothers? Looks like you don't care about your dog life. Beat him."
Da Wei, Xi Wei, Ya Qi, and Wu Shihao heard this and exchanged glances. They immediately stopped hesitating, put down what they were holding, and charged forward to fight.
Since they'd decided to follow Han Shaoqing, they had to listen to him. Moreover, they were hot-tempered people to begin with and had long been displeased with the mad dog.
It was a piece of cake for Han Shaoqing to deal with a few hooligans. The reason he let Wu Shihao and the others do it was to see their attitude.
Being his subordinates, ability was secondary; the key was obedience. Han Shaoqing didn't want to cultivate a bunch of rebellious punks.
Wu Shihao still had some skill. Among ordinary people, he was considered quite capable in a fight, able to beat Mad Dog one-on-one.
Da Wei, Xi Wei, and Ya Qi all came from the countryside. After arriving in Xiangjiang, they usually did hard labor on construction sites, and had some strength. At the very least, their physical condition was much better than those gangsters.
"You're asking for death!"
Mad Dog lived up to his name. After getting punched a few times by Wu Shihao, he pulled out a knife, intending to stab Wu Shihao to death.
Although Wu Shihao was brave, he was still flesh and blood. Seeing Mad Dog brandish a knife, he could only dodge, trying to find an opportunity to knock the knife out of Mad Dog's hand.
Mad Dog wildly swung his knife, forcing Wu Shihao back. He then glared fiercely at Han Shaoqing and slashed with his knife.
"Brother Qing, watch out!"
Seeing this, Wu Shihao rushed over without hesitation, wanting to take the knife for Han Shaoqing.
Han Shaoqing, seeing this, raised his opinion of Wu Shihao a notch. He waved his hand, gently pushing Wu Shihao aside, and then kicked Mad Dog.
His strength was immense; he could kick an elephant flying with one kick, let alone a person.
For a desperado like Mad Dog, Han Shaoqing had restrained most of his power. Even so, it wasn't something Mad Dog could withstand.
With a loud "Bang", Mad Dog, who was acting like a rabid dog, was sent flying. At least three of his ribs were broken, and he was flung seven or eight meters away, landing in a pile of garbage, wailing in pain.
Such injuries wouldn't kill him, but even if he could get out of bed in the second half of his life, he wouldn't be able to pick up a knife again.
"Dog!"
The other gangsters, seeing their boss crippled by Han Shaoqing's kick, were all shocked and dared not stay. They hurriedly carried the bleeding Mad Dog away.
Wu Shihao and the others looked at Han Shaoqing with more respect.
Da Wei said to Wu Shihao, "Brother Hao, I didn't expect Brother Qing to be even tougher than you!"
"Yeah, and he was ruthless too. Mad Dog is completely finished this time!" Xi Wei's expression was grave.
Mad Dog wasn't scary in himself, but he had Fatty Chao backing him. Now that they'd crossed that line, Fatty Chao definitely wouldn't let it go.
