Early in the morning, Icarus walked down the street feeling as if he had one partner on each side.
Bellsprout stood beside him, while Pidgey perched proudly on his shoulder. With both a Grass-type and a Flying-type at his side, he drew quite a bit of attention from the passing crowd.
In the eyes of ordinary people, Flying-type Pokémon represented two things: expensive and powerful.
Although many people glanced his way, he didn't have any close friends among them. Before long, he arrived at the city gate.
This time, the guards treated him much more warmly.
"Haha, Icarus! You're a good kid. I still owe you one!" A thirty-year-old guard with a Spearow on his shoulder stepped forward with a grin.
"Yeah! If anyone bullies you in the future, our guards will back you up!"
"You're a solid guy. If you ever want to join the guard, I'll open the back door for you!"
"It was nothing, really! Just a small favor," Icarus replied with a smile.
Someone noticed the Pidgey on his shoulder. "Is that the Pidgey you chose last night? Looks full of spirit!"
"It was recommended by Captain Sam. Of course it's good!" another guard chimed in.
"Pidgey!" The little bird flapped its wings happily at the praise. Raised in the Pokémon House, it could understand human speech.
"Yes, yes, and thanks to Uncle Sam," Icarus added casually.
He didn't bother correcting them. Unless someone inspected closely, there wasn't much visible difference between one Pidgey and another. Even if its feathers looked slightly more beautiful, that could be explained as good grooming.
As long as he said nothing, these guards would continue feeling indebted to him. And he was confident Captain Sam wouldn't clarify the details either.
"Be careful out there!"
"If it's late, knock on the gate—we'll open a door for you!"
"Thanks, everyone!"
After the friendly exchange, Icarus left the city with Bellsprout and Pidgey, heading toward the forest.
---
When he reached the outskirts, he immediately noticed something was different. The trees were sparser, and the ground bore messy battle marks.
Then he remembered—the guards had swept the perimeter clean over the past two days. For the newly born wild Pokémon, it must have been a disaster.
"If I'd known, I would've waited two more days and trained at home first," he muttered, shaking his head. But since he was already here, he decided to continue.
"At worst, we'll go deeper. I have Pidgey now."
"Pidgey!" The little bird puffed up proudly.
"Pidgey, your task is to scout ahead. Come back when you see the warning sign marking the inner circle. Don't fight any Pokémon you encounter—just report back."
"Pidgey!" With a flap of its wings, it flew off.
"Bellsprout, let's rest for a bit."
"Sprout~"
They leaned against a large tree to wait.
"Having a Pidgey really makes things easier," Icarus said. "No more cautious step-by-step scouting."
"Spri spri," Bellsprout agreed seriously.
About thirty minutes later, Pidgey returned. Its sense of direction was excellent.
"Pidgey! Pidgey~ge!" it chirped excitedly, reporting everything it had seen.
From its explanation, Icarus learned that although Pokémon density had decreased, group formations had become more common.
Along the way, Pidgey had seen seven groups:
Four groups consisting of over a dozen Caterpie and Weedle mixed together.
Two groups of five to six Rattata.
One larger group of nine Rattata, which had just attacked a group of Caterpie. Though the Caterpie outnumbered them, the Rattata were clearly stronger in combat.
"Tell me which is closest," Icarus asked.
"Pidgey~!" The nearest group was the Bug-type team to the front-left. The nine Rattata were deeper inside.
"Alright. We'll deal with the Bug-types first, then go after the Rattata. If we're quick, we might even collect some extra Bug meat."
He clapped his hands decisively.
If he only had Bellsprout, he would've retreated and trained for a few days until the grouping behavior weakened. Even though Bellsprout was strong, it couldn't handle more than ten Pokémon at once.
Five Rattata would also be troublesome due to their speed.
But now things were different.
With Pidgey controlling the skies and gaining Flying-type advantages, plus his own planning, those ten-plus Bug-types weren't so intimidating anymore.
"Let's move!"
Under Pidgey's guidance, they rushed toward their first target.
---
"One, two, three… thirteen, fourteen."
Through his binoculars, Icarus counted fourteen Bug-types: eight Caterpie and six Weedle.
He realized something important—Pokémon at the bottom of the food chain shouldn't be underestimated. Even across species, they coordinated clearly for survival.
"Too bad I don't plan to fight you head-on."
He quickly laid out the strategy.
"Bellsprout, release a large amount of Sleep Powder."
"Sprout!"
"Pidgey, create a breeze to carry it."
"Pidgey!"
They moved into position about twelve meters away.
"Shushasha—"
A thick cloud of pale powder drifted from Bellsprout. Without needing to carefully control its direction, it could release far more this time.
"Huu~"
Pidgey flapped its wings gently, guiding the powder toward the unsuspecting Bug-types.
"Caterpie?"
"Weedle?"
Caught off guard at such distance, they were struck directly. Drowsiness spread quickly. Three Caterpie collapsed into sleep almost immediately.
"Pidgey!" the bird chirped excitedly.
"Spri~"
Bellsprout switched powders.
This time, purple Poison Powder spread through the air.
"Huu"
Again, Pidgey carried it forward.
The Bugs, already slowed by drowsiness, couldn't dodge. Even the Weedle, which were Poison-types themselves, felt their blood grow sluggish and their bodies weaken.
Panicked, they launched desperate counterattacks—Poison Sting, String Shot—but the distance was too great.
Instead, the poison worsened their pain.
"Go, Pidgey. Finish them!"
"Pidgey!"
The little bird shot forward instantly, ready to clean up the weakened opponents.
