Chapter 4 - Chapter 4:The Strom That Tested Them

The late winter afternoon looked like any other day, with pale sunlight gracing the college campus. But inside Arindam's chest, a strange restlessness was brewing.

For a while now, Bharsha had been drifting. The phone calls were getting shorter, and the messages were limited to cold, clipped words: "Hmm," "Okay," "I'm busy." At first, he thought it was the pressure of exams or perhaps some family issue. But when the truth finally emerged, the sky outside was clear, yet a thunderbolt struck deep within his soul.

The NewsThat night, Bharsha's voice sounded unusually low.

"Arindam, can I tell you something?"

"Go ahead, I'm listening," Arindam replied, his heart pounding.

After a long pause, she spoke. "My father found a great opportunity. They want to send me to a prestigious college in another city. It's a huge chance for my career."

Arindam's throat went dry. "How far?"

"Far... about an eight-hour journey."

Eight hours. The distance wasn't just about the miles; it felt as though an invisible wall had suddenly risen between them.

The Onset of the StormThe days that followed were suffocating. Arindam retreated into silence, and Bharsha was shrouded in discomfort. One day, Arindam snapped.

"Do you actually want to go?"

Bharsha didn't answer.

"Talk to me, Bharsha. Tell me."

"I don't know... It's good for my future. But..."

"But what? You're afraid everything will change?" Arindam's voice was laced with bitterness. "Then go. Future comes first, right?"

Silence followed. Bharsha's voice trembled. "How could you say that to me?"

"I just don't want you to blame me later for holding you back."

"Have I ever blamed you for anything?"

"Distance changes people—you were the one who said that!" Arindam lashed out, hiding his fear of losing her behind a mask of anger. His words cut deep, like a jagged blade.

Surrender in the RainTwo days passed without a single word. Two days that felt like two decades. Arindam stayed up all night, staring out of his window. He knew he was wrong. Beneath his anger was a raw, primal fear—the fear of a life without her.

On the third day, Bharsha appeared at his college gate, catching him off guard. Her eyes were bloodshot, her face a mask of exhaustion.

"Why didn't you even try to stop me?" she asked point-blank.

Arindam was stunned. "By what right could I have stopped you?"

Bharsha took a step closer. "If I am your future, then you had every right in the world."

The scent of a storm hung heavy in the air. Her words shattered Arindam's wall of pride. He spoke softly, "I was terrified, Bharsha. I thought if you left... everything we have would end."

Tears welled up in her eyes. "If love only survives as long as two people stay in the same city, then it isn't love at all."

At that exact moment, the sky broke open, and the rain came pouring down.

A Promise in the RainStanding there, drenched in the downpour, Arindam finally spoke. "If you go... I will wait."

"For how long?" Bharsha asked with a faint smile.

"For as long as it takes."

Bharsha took his hand, interlacing her fingers with his. "Listen to me... I'm not running away. I'm going so we can build a future together. So that one day, we never have to be apart again."

Arindam smiled through the tears. "Fine. Go. But I'm keeping that seat by the window empty just for you."

"I'll be back," she whispered. "Just like this—on a rainy day."

The storm hadn't fully passed, but they no longer felt like running. They had learned a vital lesson: storms don't come to destroy relationships; they come to reveal who lets go and who holds on even tighter.
