Chapter 31 - The Goated Duo

The music kicked back in — louder, faster, pulsing through every corner of the hall.

The audience clapped along, the rhythm infectious.

Hiten and Aarya looked at each other once, wordlessly, before falling into perfect motion again. Every step was precise; every twirl a language of its own. This was no longer practice. It was something beyond — an unspoken connection painted through movement.

Hiten remembered the first time he had stumbled through these same steps — tripping, laughing awkwardly, apologizing. And now, here he was, leading Aarya across the stage as if he'd done this forever.

Aarya's eyes sparkled beneath the spotlight. For a moment, she forgot the audience. She forgot the competition. All she could feel was his steady rhythm beside her — the confidence, the warmth, and the same quiet strength that had always calmed her.

The music soared. Their movements grew bolder.

Then came the spin — the one that always scared him. But this time, Aarya's hand slid perfectly into his. The motion flowed like water. The audience gasped as Hiten lifted her gracefully, turning with the beat. The lights flashed gold and white, reflecting across the polished stage.

Their hearts thumped together in rhythm.

When the music finally reached its peak, they landed in their final pose — hands clasped, eyes locked, smiles trembling with adrenaline. The last note lingered in the air.

For a heartbeat, silence.

Then — thunderous applause.

The audience rose to their feet, shouting their names, cheering, whistling. Some even stood on chairs to see better. The sound filled every inch of the room, shaking Hiten's chest.

Aarya turned to him, laughter bubbling up. "We actually did it," she said, almost in disbelief.

He smiled back, still catching his breath. "We didn't just do it… we owned it."

Backstage, the world felt slower. Their friends rushed up to them, shouting congratulations, but for a moment, the noise blurred. Hiten could only hear Aarya's laughter beside him — soft, bright, and real.

"Hey," he said, brushing a strand of hair from her face, "you were amazing out there."

She tilted her head, teasing. "You mean we were."

Before he could reply, the announcement echoed:

"Winners of the Pair Dance Competition — Aarya and Hiten!"

The crowd erupted again.

They stepped back onto the stage, the trophy glimmering in the principal's hands. Hiten took it, his fingers trembling slightly. He turned to Aarya and raised it high — the audience roared even louder.

Aarya leaned close and whispered, "Guess all that practice was worth it."

He chuckled softly. "Guess having you as my partner was, too."

Outside, unnoticed by most, the first drop of rain hit the school courtyard. Then another. And another.

The drizzle soon grew steadier, tapping softly against the windows, reflecting the stage lights like stars on glass.

Aarya looked up toward the sound, her smile gentle. "It's raining again…"

Hiten followed her gaze, eyes soft. "Yeah," he said quietly, "it always does, when we're together."

She laughed, brushing her fingers through her damp hair as they stepped outside after the event, trophies still in hand. The rain soaked their uniforms, but neither cared.

They stood under the soft glow of the streetlight, laughing between breaths, drenched and glowing.

For the first time in a long while, the rain didn't just fall — it meant something.

As Aarya spun once under the rain, her bracelet glinted faintly — a small shimmer of light, almost pulsing, before fading again.

Neither of them noticed. But the rain did.
