Chapter 238 - A Spy Who Got A System

Minato Namikaze stood and walked to the door before the knock could sound again.

An ANBU operative stood in the corridor, and something in their posture immediately set off alarms in his mind.

"Lord Minato." The operative produced a scroll. "Battle report from the Frost Country. Just arrived."

"Thank you." Minato accepted it, already dreading what came next.

"One more thing," the ANBU continued. "Lord Hokage has terminated your protective detail assignment."

Minato blinked. "My... protective detail?"

"Your mission is guarding Lady Kushina. It's been cancelled."

The words hit harder than expected. Minato's expression shifted—surprise, confusion, something deeper underneath.

"What's wrong?" Kushina appeared behind him, tilting her head. "Did something happen?"

"Nothing." Minato unrolled the scroll. "Just the Frost Country report. Want to read it together?"

"Is it my turn to fight?" Kushina's eyes lit up with anticipation.

But as she read, her excitement deflated. "Wait... it's already over? Before I even got there?"

"Incredible," Minato murmured, more to himself.

The implications crystallized in his mind. If things proceeded as expected, Tsunade would become Fourth Hokage. And then...

Then came Hanekawa.

Logically, the boy should be positioned for Sixth Hokage—he was young, had time to grow. But strength determined rank in the ninja world, and age became irrelevant once you reached a certain threshold.

Hanekawa had already crossed that threshold.

Minato felt something bitter settle in his chest. Unless he accomplished something equally extraordinary, his path to Hokage was closing. And what could possibly compare to defeating the Two-Tails, Eight-Tails, and the Fourth Raikage in a single campaign?

Nothing. There was nothing.

"You look upset," Kushina observed.

"Just thinking about the Hokage succession," Minato admitted. "I don't think I can compete with Lady Tsunade and Hanekawa."

Kushina considered this, then nodded slowly. "If you're not strong enough, there's nothing to say about it."

"Exactly." Minato smiled, and meant it. "Losing to someone that strong isn't shameful. I accept it."

Iwagakure Village - Tsuchikage's Office

Ohnoki set down the intelligence report with visible relief.

"We made the right choice negotiating with Konoha," he said quietly. "If we'd attacked..."

He didn't need to finish. The fate of the Hidden Cloud was answer enough.

"The Eight-Tails couldn't stop him," Kitsuchi said grimly. "Our Four-Tails and Five-Tails would have been nothing."

"And the Four-Tails was captured alive," Ohnoki added. "Using only Water Style. He didn't even deploy Wood Style."

"Wood Style..." Kitsuchi's voice dropped. "Senju Hashirama's technique. Konoha has it again."

Ohnoki's eyes grew distant, remembering his youth—following the Second Tsuchikage into Konoha, watching Madara Uchiha defeat them both without effort. Because behind Madara stood Hashirama Senju, the God of the Ninja World.

History was repeating itself.

"What do we do?" Kitsuchi asked after a heavy silence.

"Nothing," Ohnoki said flatly. "Doing nothing is our best option."

Kitsuchi wanted to argue but stopped himself, settling for a quiet sigh.

"The Ninja World War is over," Ohnoki continued. "We're entering a period of relative peace. Konoha's lead is significant, but not insurmountable—not yet."

He stood, moving toward the window. "We'll pursue two strategies. First, develop the village's economy. Second, focus on training the next generation of young talent."

The middle-aged and older generation had reached their limits. If Iwagakure wanted to catch up, it would be through fresh blood.

"How is Kurotsuchi?" Ohnoki asked suddenly, thinking of his granddaughter.

"Still fussing about when I left," Kitsuchi smiled.

"Then let's go see the future of Iwagakure Village," Ohnoki said, standing.

Hidden Sand Temporary Base - Frost Country

Pakura and Rasa sat in the command tent, processing the message that had just arrived via Konoha courier.

The war was over.

The Hidden Cloud had been defeated.

Hanekawa had won.

"Is he telling the truth?" Maki asked, breaking the silence.

"He wouldn't lie," Rasa said heavily. "We can verify it the moment we return to base camp."

"I never imagined the war would end like this," Pakura said, rubbing her temples.

"I'd prefer almost any other outcome," Maki added with a sigh.

The implications hung unspoken between them. Yes, they were allies with Konoha now. But the ninja world had no permanent allies—only temporary interests.

One day, Sand and Leaf would face each other across a battlefield.

What would the Hidden Sand use to resist a power like that?

"I just hope we don't get another Senju Hashirama," Rasa said quietly.

"That's a problem for the future," Pakura replied. "For now, we're on the winning side."

Kirigakure Village - Late Night

Mei Terumi stood at her window, watching the perpetual mist swirl outside. The Hidden Mist Village's fog was different from the Hidden Rain Village's constant downpour—it came and went, shaped by the village's unique jutsu.

Did that pervert die in the Frost Country?

Information from the battlefield had been sparse. Unless it was important enough, news traveled slowly to the Mist Village.

She twisted a strand of hair around her finger, considering. Would Hanekawa's death count as important information?

Probably. The Mist Village had lost the Third Mizukage and the Seven Ninja Swordsmen to him and Tsunade. They had every reason to celebrate his demise.

But Mei found herself hoping for something else entirely.

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

An ANBU appeared at her door. "Lady Mei. The Mizukage requests your presence at an emergency jonin meeting."

Mei's stomach tightened. Another war?

She arrived at the Mizukage's office to find every notable jonin already assembled. Someone handed her a scroll.

She opened it and read.

Her teeth sank into her lower lip hard enough to leave marks.

Hanekawa.

The name dominated the report. His victories. His new techniques. Wood Style.

How had he become so much stronger in such a short time?

"The Hidden Leaf has won," Karatachi Yagura announced. "The Hidden Cloud has been defeated. The Ninja World War is over."

Mei closed the scroll, but her mind remained turbulent.

She'd believed she could surpass him eventually. That with time and effort, she could bridge the gap.

But humans had limits. And Hanekawa... Hanekawa didn't look human anymore. He looked like a tailed beast wearing human skin.

How else could he have defeated two tailed beasts simultaneously?

"Kirigakure must change its development strategy," Yagura continued. "Effective immediately, the Blood Mist Village policy ends."

Mei said nothing. She'd wanted this—the end of the brutal training that had defined their village. But she'd never expected it would take Konoha's overwhelming strength to force the change.

Frost Country - Konoha Camp

Hanekawa stirred awake to a familiar scent.

Opening his eyes, he saw bare feet, then Tsunade's face—tired but present. She'd been working since dawn, managing the aftermath of battle, coordinating with Orochimaru's forced surrender, handling logistics.

"Teacher," he said, patting the carpet beside him. "Come sleep."

Tsunade looked at him. After resting, his chakra had recovered significantly. The Yin Seal's aftereffects had completely faded—no trace remained.

She stared for several seconds, then sat and lay down beside him.

"What's the situation with the Hidden Cloud?" Hanekawa asked, turning to face her.

"The remaining ninjas fled overnight," Tsunade said, sounding slightly uncomfortable. Why does lying next to him feel so strange now? "The ones we captured will be easier to manage."

"Good." His eyes drifted across her form—the tight fit of her clothes, the curve of her body. He caught himself and looked away, trying to appear innocent.

Tsunade noticed and raised an eyebrow.

"With so many prisoners, it's better they left," she continued. "Controlling the Fourth Raikage, the Two-Tails, and the Eight-Tails will be leverage enough."

"Can I ask for something?" Hanekawa met her eyes again.

"Of course." Tsunade smiled. "If you're not qualified to ask, no one is."

"All the ninjutsu from the Third and Fourth Raikages. Everything."

Lightning Chakra Mode, the Strongest Lightning Armor—he wanted it all. He phrased it broadly to avoid suspicion.

"No problem," Tsunade said without hesitation. "You can demand all of the Hidden Cloud's jutsu. They won't dare refuse."

"True." Hanekawa's hand found hers, fingers intertwining.

Tsunade froze, wanting to say something but ultimately staying silent.

"What about the four Root operatives?" he asked.

"Secretly imprisoned where even Orochimaru can't find them," Tsunade replied.

Her body trembled slightly as his fingers traced patterns across her palm.

"Behave yourself!" she snapped, glaring at him.

"Yes, Teacher," he said with exaggerated seriousness.

Tsunade felt helpless. When did he become so bold? Though she knew the answer—she'd allowed it, step by step.

"Will you become Hokage when we return?" Hanekawa asked, gently twisting his index finger around hers.

"You don't become Hokage just because you want to," Tsunade replied, surprising herself by not refusing outright. "We'll see what happens when we get back."

"Will the Daimyo of the Land of Fire visit Konoha?"

"You're such an annoying brat!" Tsunade rolled her eyes. "I don't know!"

"Getting angry makes you look old," Hanekawa said with a wide smile. "You're tired too, Teacher. Sleep."

Tsunade started to stand. "I should go back to—"

He pulled her back down.

She frowned, looking at him. But after their eyes met and held, she softened first.

"Sleep," she said, closing her eyes.

She didn't pull her hand away.

The two fell asleep holding hands, the weight of victory settling around them like a blanket.
