Chapter 1 - Sunshine and Freckles

In the small town of Bellwood, where the streets curved gently like a warm embrace and time seemed to stroll instead of rush, kids ruled the neighborhoods. Every day was a chance to explore something new, to laugh a little louder, to dream a little bigger. The scent of freshly cut grass mixed with the hum of cicadas in the summer air, and the houses echoed with the laughter of children whose friendships were as deep as the town's roots.

For Alina Evan and Damien Laurent, Bellwood was more than just home-it was their kingdom.

Alina had been born and raised in Bellwood, a place where neighbors were like extended family and everyone's business was common knowledge. She was a whirlwind of energy, with deep brown eyes that sparkled with mischief and a crown of coiled hair that refused to be tamed. Damien, on the other hand, was all freckles and messy red hair, his pale skin almost glowing in the golden sunlight. From the moment they met as toddlers, they had been inseparable.

"Sunshine," Damien called her one day, squinting up at her from beneath their favorite oak tree in the park. The nickname had stuck.

Alina had rolled her eyes at first, but secretly, she loved it. Sunshine. It made her feel seen, as if Damien had looked at her and found something no one else had noticed. Her smile!

Their days were filled with adventures-climbing trees, running barefoot through the park, and challenging each other to races that neither could win without a good dose of playful cheating. Alina was the grounded one, always questioning Damien's wild ideas. He was the dreamer, conjuring up fantasies of rocket ships and superhero capes.

"I will go to Mars one day," Damien announced one lazy afternoon as they layed on the grass, staring up at the clouds.

Alina smirked, brushing her fingers against the grass. "Mars? Please! You'd get there, sneeze, and send yourself flying back to Earth."

Damien sat up, feigning offense. "Hey! My superhero sneeze is a skill, not a curse."

They both burst out laughing, the kind of laughter that made their stomachs ache but left them wanting more. Moments like this defined their friendship: simple, effortless, and full of joy.

Over the years, their bond only grew.

The town of Bellwood saw them as a pair, two halves of the same coin. Whether it was the annual Bellwood Fair, where they dominated the three-legged race, or Damien's infamous "Spaghetti Incident," which had the whole neighborhood laughing for weeks, they were always together.

The Spaghetti Incident had started with Damien's bold attempt to cook dinner for his mom and ended in a cloud of smoke and a very loud fire alarm. Alina had been there, of course, laughing as she waved a dish towel in a hopeless effort to clear the air. They never let Damien live it down.

Despite their endless fun, their lives weren't perfect. Alina's father worked long hours out of town, and her mom, Elena, was loving but often busy keeping the house running smoothly. Damien, on the other hand, lived with Rebeka, a single mom, who filled every gap in his life with love and encouragement. In many ways, they were each other's family.

Alina spent countless evenings at Damien's cozy house, curled up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn whereas Rebeka told funny stories about the town. It felt like a second home to her. Likewise, Damien was a second child at Alina's house; her dad would teach him how to fix things and her mom would tease them about their endless giggling.

"Those two are trouble," Elena would say with a shake of her head, though her smile betrayed her fondness.

"They're surely going to be in each other's lives forever," Karen often reply, watching them chase each other through the yard.
