The North, the Wall, Tunnel Defense Line
With the efforts of the Unsullied warriors, the Night's Watch soldiers moved out rows of pre-installed fences. These wooden fences were densely covered with dragonglass, looking as thick as thorns on a rose stem.
They would first use the defensive facilities to resist and then push forward bit by bit. Due to the previous dragonfire and the logs from the top of the Wall, many wights had already been destroyed.
When planning the northern strategy with Daenerys, Jon had already considered many issues. He would never use a sea of people to fight a sea of the undead like in his past life.
With the efforts of the Night's Watch Crasters, a camp composed of countless wooden fences soon appeared. The ground here had become somewhat loose due to the previous Fire Oil burning.
Therefore, the Night's Watch Crasters quickly set up the wooden fences, while the Dothraki and Unsullied continued to provide outward cover.
"Roar, roar, roar…"
Just then, bursts of sharp roars quickly appeared on the periphery of the Unsullied's defensive circle. The soldiers responsible for guarding the top of the Wall soon discovered these terrifying monsters approaching.
Although it was dark near the Wall, they could still observe the situation on the outskirts of the Haunted Forest through telescopes.
Soon, the herald who had been observing the situation below the Tunnel Defense Line noticed the warning signal from the top.
"Fall back! Defend!"
Following the herald's command, the soldiers who had been waiting for a long time moved out rows of caltrops and quickly placed a circle around the wooden fences.
After receiving the order, the Unsullied retreated bit by bit toward the newly built camp gate. It was because of their presence that the construction of the camp went very smoothly, and now, it was time to test how strong the camp's defenses were.
"Whoosh, whoosh…"
Just as the Unsullied retreated into the camp, a powerful blizzard appeared directly outside the camp. The biting cold wind made the temporary camp shake.
"Launch!"
At the herald's command, rows of pre-assembled simple cheval de frise were launched directly by trebuchets.
The soldiers already standing outside the wooden walls threw out dragonglass caltrops the size of basketballs. Under the protection of the caltrops and cheval de frise on the periphery, a series of insurmountable defense lines were formed outside this camp.
A large amount of dragonglass was embedded in the caltrops and cheval de frise, which could effectively stop the wights from approaching the camp. They were arranged as densely as pebbles on a park sidewalk; no matter how many wights passed by, they would be pierced by the dragonglass on them.
The special dragonglass caltrops were scattered on the ground. Once stepped on by these wights, their broken bodies would be instantly destroyed by the dragonglass.
Although these wights stumbled, their numbers were vast, as if endless.
It was precisely to deal with such a dense sea of corpses that Jon thought of using dragonglass and fire against these fellows.
"Roar, roar, roar…"
As the wights continued to approach, the soldiers on the wooden walls also saw these loathsome creatures.
They were pale-faced with hollow eyes, emitting low growls that sent shivers down one's spine.
However, as time passed, the Night's Watch warriors and Daenerys's Dothraki had long since adapted to these monsters.
So, seeing more and more wights, many soldiers instead felt that letting them gather together would make them easier to eliminate.
The battle began!
"Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh…"
"Roar, roar, roar…"
Amidst the cold wind and roars, the wights surged toward the camp like a tide, but they could not cross those seemingly simple defense lines.
The huge caltrops quickly pierced their bodies, releasing the power of dragonglass into them. Since they had no consciousness, they didn't know to retreat after being attacked, and thus were quickly killed by the power of the dragonglass.
Rows of cheval de frise blocked the wights' advance like city walls. The dragonglass installed on the cheval de frise was like the thorns of a cactus; the moment the wights' hands touched them, the dragonglass would pierce into their decaying bodies.
The dragonglass caltrops were even more terrifying. In many cases, those wights would simply collapse while walking. It was only because they lacked the consciousness to observe; otherwise, they would have found that their lower bodies were full of dragonglass spikes.
There were dragonglass mines in the North, Dragonstone, and the Vale. Ever since Jon began to occupy these places, he had been hiring Crasters and civilians to polish them.
It was only because Jon didn't have enough time; if possible, he would have even wrapped the periphery of the Wall with a layer of dragonglass. Then, unless the Night King had a dragon, he would never be able to break through the defense line Jon had set for him.
At this time, the Night's Watch soldiers at the top of the Wall also quickly discovered the situation here. Under the heralds' orders, the trebuchets were directly loaded with dragonglass projectiles.
These special dragonglass projectiles were made of ice and dragonglass. They were simple to make and relatively light. After falling from a height, the scattered dragonglass could strike the wights, and with a bit of luck, even take down one or two White Walkers.
"Fire! Fire! Fire!"
With the firm and decisive command of the officers, the air above the entire Wall seemed to tremble. Following that, the sound of wooden frames crashing began to echo atop the Wall.
Countless ice projectiles made of ice and dragonglass, controlled by the Night's Watch soldiers, whistled down from the sky like meteors streaking across the heavens. After piercing through the surging blizzard, they fell directly toward the wight swarms below.
The terrifying wights awakened by the White Walkers were now advancing under their masters' orders. The eerie energy controlling them harbored a deep hatred for the warm blood of humans; even if only half their bodies remained, they would still crawl with their hands.
These special dragonglass ice projectiles, bolstered by the force of the trebuchets and the gravity of the fall, descended at a terrifying speed, finally slamming into the wight army with an astounding impact.
"Boom, boom, boom…"
"Crack…"
"Bang, bang, bang…"
The moment the ice projectiles hit the ground or a wight, they instantly shattered into countless sharp fragments due to the terrifying impact.
The scattering dragonglass was fatal to the wights. Large grains of dragonglass would kill a wight instantly, while small grains would leave them covered in wounds.
When the energy of the dragonglass came into contact with the decaying bodies of the wights, it would instantly react, causing their bodies to crack.
Following the assault of the terrifying dragonglass rain, the wights surging like ocean waves were instantly killed in large numbers.
With the appearance of these dragonglass ice projectiles, the pressure on the camp at the tunnel entrance was instantly greatly reduced. In a short while, countless wights fell on the path of their charge.
Although they were much stronger than ordinary zombies, they could not advance much in the face of such a dense attack.
The entire camp was like a tortoise retracted into its shell, and a tortoise covered in spikes at that. This situation made it impossible for the wights attacking from all sides to break through.
Furthermore, up to now, they still could not break through to the base of the camp because, in the middle of this camp, the Crasters of the Night's Watch were building sentry towers similar to siege towers.
These were crowded with many soldiers holding repeating crossbows. Under their operation, countless dragonglass arrows were fired as if they cost nothing. As long as a wight broke through the caltrops or cheval de frise, it would encounter a massive wave of arrows.
As the battle continued, the wights suffered an unprecedented blow. Some White Walkers among them were even hit by dragonglass because they were too close and instantly turned into fragments.
Jon, who came from the Blue Star, had always firmly believed in one principle: "All fear stems from insufficient firepower." This was also the reason why he had gone to great lengths to seize the Kingdom of the Three Daughters in the first place.
One must know that these three city-states combined were equivalent to a small kingdom. It was precisely because of the intervention of the Kingdom of the Three Daughters that the famous House Velaryon fell from its peak to the valley.
After occupying the North and the Vale, Jon had been continuously transporting war resources to the Wall. It was because of the accumulation during that time, along with the assistance when Eddard Stark was in power, that the current Wall had become an indestructible fortress.
"Watch out for Giant Wights!"
As the battle continued, a soldier standing at the top observing the distance suddenly shouted.
Immediately after, the soldiers on the wooden walls saw black shadows flying from a distance. The speed of those shadows was so fast that they had no time to react.
"Boom, boom, boom…"
"Crack…"
"Bang, bang, bang…"
"Look out…"
…After a series of violent impacts and warning shouts, the soldiers in the camp were surprised to find that the black shadows being thrown in were actually wights.
Some had been pierced to death by dragonglass because they hit the wooden walls, some were smashed to pieces, and others were missing limbs, but these surviving wights caused a certain impact on the soldiers inside the camp.
At this moment, heavy footsteps also came from the periphery. The soldiers on the wooden walls or atop the wooden towers were surprised to find that those human wights were actually using their own bodies to pave the way for the Giant Wights.
