Chapter 194 - No One Cares About the TruthKonoha Village Gate

After surviving assassination, ambush, and near death,

Hiruzen Sarutobi finally stepped back into Konoha.

Beside him walked Yamato — still going by the name Tenzo.

They hadn't even crossed the gates before both men froze.

Convoys.

One after another.

Supply wagons loaded with weapons, rations, sealing tools.

Security at the gate was triple what it normally was.

This wasn't heightened alert.

This was mobilization.

"Lord Hokage… something's happened," Tenzo said quietly.

Hiruzen's brows knitted together.

He didn't need Tenzo to tell him.

The signs were unmistakable.

Konoha was in a wartime posture.

And he had only been gone a few days.

Gone for mere days — and the world had shifted.

His mind raced.

Who?

Kumo? Iwa?

Or had Kirigakure finally made its move?

None of it aligned with the diplomatic state he had left behind.

Which meant—

There was only one likely catalyst.

His jaw tightened.

Danzo.

Recognition

Because they had traveled in disguise to avoid pursuit, the gate guards didn't recognize them immediately.

A shinobi approached cautiously.

"If you're here to register missions, Konoha is in a wartime state. All missions are suspended. If you're traders, proceed to inspection—"

Hiruzen formed a single seal.

The disguise dissolved.

The guard's eyes widened.

"Third Hokage-sama?!"

Hiruzen studied him briefly.

"Yuuichi Kagura… correct?"

The man straightened instantly.

"Yes! Hokage-sama!"

Hiruzen didn't waste time.

"What happened?"

Yuuichi reported everything in detail:

The village attack.

The chaos.

The escape of the Eight-Tails jinchūriki.

The pursuit.

The Raikage's advance.

Border movements from Iwa and Suna.

By the end, Hiruzen's breathing had grown uneven.

"So bold… Danzo dares to escalate matters to this extent?"

Tenzo stood stunned.

He had participated in the assassination scheme.

He knew the original plan.

This…

This wasn't it.

When had this become a trap to ignite war?

Was this truly Danzo's endgame all along?

The Reality of Power

As they walked toward the Hokage Tower, Tenzo finally asked:

"Lord Hokage… why did things turn out like this?"

Hiruzen's voice turned cold.

"Attempting to assassinate a Hokage is a capital crime."

"Danzo needed something larger — something louder — to drown it out."

"A war."

"A war shifts focus. A war reshapes narratives."

He exhaled slowly.

"I must admit… it is a clever move."

"He pins the assassination on Kumo."

"And if victory follows, he may even be hailed as a hero."

Tenzo clenched his fists.

"But that's not the truth! He clearly—"

"No one cares about the truth."

Hiruzen cut him off sharply.

The words landed like iron.

"People care about outcomes."

"If the result benefits the majority, the truth becomes irrelevant."

"Only the losers insist on truth."

His voice lowered.

"And in this matter… I am the one who lost."

But then—

His eyes sharpened.

"However… Danzo miscalculated."

"Kumo's response has exceeded his expectations."

"If events spiral beyond control…"

"He may fall from hero to criminal."

"And when the tide turns…"

"Everything he has done will be accounted for."

They reached the Hokage Tower.

Hiruzen pushed open the war room doors without knocking.

The Return of the Third

Inside, arguments halted instantly.

Eyes turned.

Shock rippled through the chamber.

"Third Hokage-sama?!"

Hiruzen stepped inside.

His gaze swept the room.

Relief.

Excitement.

Tension.

Calculation.

And finally—

His eyes locked with Danzo Shimura.

They held each other's stare for several long seconds.

Then Hiruzen spoke calmly:

"I have returned."

Kikyo Mountain Fortress

Far away—

On the fortress wall.

Uchiha Jin leaned against a crate of shuriken, eyes closed, conserving strength.

Then—

Hyuga Hizashi's voice rang out.

"They're here!"

"Ten kilometers out. Rapid advance. Five minutes to contact!"

The atmosphere shifted instantly.

The air thickened.

Every shinobi on the wall straightened.

Jin's eyes opened.

He vaulted to the parapet.

"All units prepare!"

"Follow the established defense plan!"

"Hyuga archers—fire and fall back! Do NOT engage in close combat unless unavoidable!"

"Everyone else—stall them!"

"Create space for the archers!"

Moments later—

A streak of lightning tore across the horizon.

At its center—

A towering figure wrapped in crackling chakra.

A.

Behind him—

A black tide.

Two thousand Cloud shinobi.

The battle for Kikyo Mountain was about to begin.
