Chapter 3 - What Happened?

Three months earlier…

Hans received a call from Oliver.

— Yo, where are you, man?

Hans, whispering:

— I can't talk right now.

Oliver said loudly:

— WHY ARE YOU WHISPERING, MAN?

— Lower your voice, idiot. Six months ago I made a promise to some people, telling them they could use Kamui for their TV show…

Oliver said, shocked:

— WHAT?!

— I completely forgot… Tell Sam I will be late…

— OKAY.

After Hans hung up, a woman approached him.

— Mr. Logan, do you have somewhere else to be?

— In fact, yes. It's my cousin's birthday.

— If you can find someone to close behind you, you can leave an hour early.

— Thank you.

— That wasn't free.

— Of course… and the price is…?

— Your number…

— Okay, there it is.

After the woman finished putting her number into Hans's phone, a call appeared with the name Aidan.

— Someone's calling you, Mr. Logan…

The woman handed Hans the phone.

— You must be in demand a lot, don't you?

— Yes, actually.

Hans took the call.

— Yo.

— Yoo, what's up? I remember you telling me today is little Sam's birthday…

— Yeah. By the way, can you do me a favor…?

— What do you need?

— Can you be at Kamui in about an hour…

— Why?

— To take my place on a TV show.

— Oh yeah, I'm up…

An hour later, Aidan arrived on a motorcycle. Well dressed, he got off, removed his helmet, and approached Hans, who was standing outside Kamui with a pack of cigarettes, ready to open it.

— Yoo, Hans. Didn't you quit smoking?

— I wasn't going to smoke.

— Yeah… what do you think?

— About what?

— My suit!

— Why did you put on a suit? You're only going to close Kamui.

— What are you talking about? The TV show…?

— Yeah. After they're done, close the place. I have to go now…

Aidan, whispering:

— Man, you have to stop doing this.

— Thanks, man.

— Yeah, yeah.

Hans was on his way to the forest, ready to join Sam, Oliver, and the girls. He got out of his car because the place was inaccessible by car. As he got closer, he saw branches snapped off the trees.

He grew serious.

— What happened here?

Worry rising, he headed straight toward the place Sam and Oliver used to play.

— Oh no…

He started running.

Hans finally reached the clearing, but he did not see a party. Instead, the place was completely destroyed — tents torn apart, the ground disturbed, everything wrong.

In a panic, he froze… then immediately called the police.

He stayed there until they arrived.

The Present

The nurse assigned to Selina entered her room and found Oliver asleep beside the bed.

— Sir… Sir… what room are you in? Which nurse is assigned to you?

— Li…nda…

— Okay…

At the same time, Hans was in Oliver's room, dozing in a chair.

Oliver suddenly stirred.

— Hans… HANS… I'm sorry I let Sam down…

Hans stood immediately.

— Hey, calm down. Let me help you get to your bed.

Oliver didn't move.

— Hans… tell me what happened that night.

Hans hesitated.

— You don't need that right now.

— I do. Everyone keeps avoiding it. How did you find us?

Hans exhaled slowly.

— I parked and get out but the woods were too quiet. No noises. No voices.

Oliver whispered:

— Then what?

— I called your names. All of you. Over and over.

— And?

— No one answered.

Oliver's hands trembled.

— Did you stay?

— Of course I stayed. Didn't move until the sirens came.

Oliver swallowed hard.

— I remember something hitting me… from behind. Then Sam yelling my name. Then… nothing.

Hans leaned forward.

— Anything else?

Oliver shut his eyes, forcing the memory.

— Just one thing…

— What?

Oliver's voice dropped.

— It felt like someone was watching us.

Silence filled the room.

— You believe me, right?

Hans answered instantly:

— Always.

Meanwhile — Police Station

Detective Andy closed the file halfway.

— Logan reached the scene and called emergency almost immediately.

Jim nodded.

— Means he knew fast something was wrong.

— Says the place was silent.

— Birthday parties aren't silent.

Andy tapped another page.

— Stayed on the line with dispatch the whole time.

Jim leaned back.

— That's someone trying to keep it together.

Andy spoke quietly:

— None of the survivors described a clear attacker.

Jim frowned.

— Not one?

— Just confusion. Noise. Then silence.

Jim muttered:

— That's not normal.

Andy closed the folder.

— No… it isn't.

Hospital — Present

Oliver looked up at Hans again.

— Someone was there that night. I know it.

Hans pulled the chair closer beside him.

— Then we'll find out who.

For the first time since waking up… Oliver nodded.

And this time, the silence between them didn't feel like fear.
