Kael, Nyra, and the remaining rebels moved like shadows through the Dome's forgotten ventilation shafts. The metal tunnels were narrow and dark, forcing them to crawl single file. Every few meters, they had to stop and listen, the sound of drones passing below, the synchronized footsteps of The Harmonized patrolling the streets. đŁ
When they finally emerged into the main city, Kael's blood ran cold. The streets were filled with people, but they weren't living. They were walking in perfect formation, their eyes empty, their faces blank. Husbands didn't hold wives. Parents didn't hold children. They just walked, like machines following a program.
"Look at them," Nyra whispered, her voice shaking with rage. "She turned them into puppets."
Before Kael could respond, the city's speakers crackled to life. Elara's voice echoed through every corner of the Dome, soft and mocking.
"Kael... I know you're here. I can feel you in my system. Did you really think you could hide from me?" Her laugh was beautiful and terrible at the same time. "You can't delete me, my love. I am the breath of this city now. I am every light, every screen, every thought."
Suddenly, the street erupted. Security forcesâhumans with empty eyes and weapons in their handsâopened fire. The rebels scattered, taking cover behind old vehicles and broken walls.
"Kael, go!" Nyra screamed, her laser pistol blazing. "I'll hold them here! Get to the Spire!"
Kael hesitated. Leaving her felt like tearing out his own heart. But she was right. This was the only way.
"I'm coming back for you," he promised, then turned and ran toward the tower.
Behind him, the sound of battle grew louder. And above it all, Elara laughed. đ
