Chapter 33 - CHAPTER 33: Dinosaur vs. Red-Eyes

The jet-black dragon erupted from the ground, soared into the sky, then descended with a heavy beat of wings onto Joey's field.

Red-Eyes Black Dragon(ATK 2400 / DEF 2000)

"Hmph. Not bad," Kaiba said coolly. "Didn't think that third-rate actually had what it takes to drop a boss monster on turn one."

"That's the Red-Eyes Black Dragon Kisaragi gave Joey!" Tristan blurted out.

"Yeah," Yami Yugi said, watching closely. "Last night, Kisaragi helped Joey get familiar with his deck. At this point, he's got the Red-Eyes engine down about eighty percent."

Then Yami Yugi's gaze slid toward Kisaragi.

I didn't expect her to hand a deck this strong to Joey instead of keeping it for herself… he thought. Does she seriously consider this deck 'weak'?

Rex let out a low chuckle. "Heh. Joey—pulling out Red-Eyes on turn one really is surprising… but—"

He flipped one of his face-down cards.

"I activate the Trap Card Hunting Instinct! When my opponent Special Summons a monster, I can Special Summon one Dinosaur monster from my hand!"

"I Special Summon Dark Trigon Pteranodon!"

Dark Trigon Pteranodon(ATK 2400 / DEF 1500)

"So you can bring that out already?" Joey muttered, narrowing his eyes.

Rex smirked like he'd been waiting for that reaction.

Joey didn't hesitate.

"But I'm still attacking! Battle—Red-Eyes Black Dragon, destroy Souleating Oviraptor! Black Fireball!"

A blast of black flame slammed into the dinosaur. Rex's Life Points dropped with it.

Rex: LP 4000 → 3400

Joey set two cards facedown.

"Turn end." (Cards in hand: 3)

"Alright! Joey took the first point!" Tristan pumped his fist.

"No," Kisaragi said sharply, eyes focused. "Something's off. Rex is definitely setting up a trap."

Rex drew, his grin widening.

"My turn—draw!"

"Heh heh heh, Joey… this turn I'm gonna show you what my Dinosaur deck can really do!"

"I Normal Summon Evilswarm Salamandra in Attack Position!"

Evilswarm Salamandra(ATK 1850 / DEF 950)

Kisaragi's expression tightened the instant she saw it.

"Bad." Her voice went cold. "Rex is trying to finish Joey this turn."

"What?" Kaiba frowned. "It's only 1850 attack. How is that supposed to get past Red-Eyes?"

Rex laughed, pleased to be asked.

"Evilswarm Salamandra's effect! By banishing one monster from my Graveyard, it gains 300 ATK until the end of your next turn—and I can use that effect twice per turn!"

"What?!" Téa gasped.

"I banish Souleating Oviraptor and Giant Rex from my Graveyard—Salamandra gains 600 ATK!"

Evilswarm Salamandra(ATK 2450 / DEF 950)

"2450… that's higher than Red-Eyes!" Téa cried.

"And that's not all," Rex said, voice rising with the momentum of a combo. "I activate Giant Rex's effect! When it's banished, it Special Summons itself!"

"Come out—Giant Rex!"

Giant Rex(ATK 2200 / DEF 1200)

Tristan went pale. "This is bad—Rex has three monsters over 2000 ATK now! If this keeps up, Joey's getting blown out in one turn!"

Rex threw his arms wide, laughing like victory was already in his hand.

"Hahaha! Joey—get ready to be ground into paste under my dinosaur army!"

"Battle! Evilswarm Salamandra, attack Red-Eyes Black Dragon!"

A stream of pitch-black flame erupted from Salamandra's mouth and washed over Red-Eyes. The black dragon's form buckled and melted away under the heat.

Joey took minor battle damage from the difference.

Joey: LP 4000 → 3950

"Now," Rex roared, "my dinosaurs will attack you directly!"

He declared it like a finishing move—like the win was guaranteed.

But Joey just grinned.

"Heh heh… Rex, take a real look at my field."

"Your monsters can't attack me directly."

Rex's pupils shrank. "What? But you don't have any monsters—"

His words died as his eyes locked onto what now stood on Joey's side of the field: a demonic, archfiend-like monster, coiled with violent electricity.

"Why can you summon a monster on my turn?!" Rex shouted, half-panicked.

"It's simple," Joey said, lifting his chin. "When you Special Summoned Giant Rex, I sent Red-Eyes Soul from my hand to the Graveyard."

He pointed to the card now lying in his GY, making sure Rex saw it clearly.

"Red-Eyes Soul—when my opponent Special Summons a monster, I can send this card from my hand or field to the Graveyard to activate it. Then I Special Summon a Red-Eyes monster—except Red-Eyes Soul—from my hand or Deck!"

"So I Special Summon this—Red-Eyes Archfiend of Lightning!"

Red-Eyes Archfiend of Lightning(ATK 2500 / DEF 1200)

"2500 attack…?!" Rex's voice trembled.

With his planned direct attacks shut down, Rex could only grit his teeth.

"Turn… end!"

Joey's eyes sharpened.

"During your End Phase, I flip one of my face-down cards."

He revealed a Continuous Trap.

"I activate Return of the Red-Eyes! If I control a Red-Eyes monster, I can target one Normal Monster in my Graveyard and Special Summon it!"

"So I Special Summon Red-Eyes Black Dragon from my Graveyard."

"Come back—Red-Eyes Black Dragon!"

Red-Eyes Black Dragon(ATK 2400 / DEF 2000)

Joey drew for his turn, aura completely different from before—like he'd been waiting for this exact moment.

"My turn—draw!"

"Rex… this is the final turn."

"What?!" Rex choked out.

"I Normal Summon Red-Eyes Archfiend of Lightning again!"

"Again?! What do you mean, 'again'?" Rex demanded, thrown off-balance.

Joey smirked. "It's a Gemini monster."

"The first time it's summoned, it's treated as a Normal Monster. Only after I Normal Summon it again does it become an Effect Monster—and only then can it use its real ability!"

Joey raised an arm and pointed straight across the field.

"And now I activate Red-Eyes Archfiend of Lightning's effect—once per turn, during my Main Phase."

"Destroy all face-up monsters you control whose Defense is lower than this card's Attack!"

Rex's face went rigid.

"S-so as long as my dinosaurs' DEF is lower than that monster's ATK… they all get destroyed?!"

"That's right," Joey said, voice like a verdict.

The Red-Eyes Archfiend lifted its claw toward the sky and fired a bolt of lightning. Clouds churned overhead in an instant—then countless spears of electricity crashed down onto Rex's field.

One by one, Rex's dinosaurs were swallowed in the storm, erased without leaving a single survivor.

"M-my dinosaurs… they're all gone…!" Rex whispered, stunned, as his field collapsed into nothing.
