Chapter 70 - Bridge of Ancestors

The heavy grinding of the Sacred Gate finally came to a halt, leaving a massive, yawning archway that led into the heart of the mountain. The White Key of Aethelgard remained slotted deep into the center of the door, its glowing light fading into a permanent, serene chime. It stayed behind, locking itself into the ancient mechanism to keep the gate open forever. Its cosmic purpose was served.

Hand in hand, Vaelora and Azeal stepped over the threshold into the deep cavern.

The air inside the Vault of Souls did not smell of decay or dark magic. Instead, it was crisp and carried the faint, sweet scent of mountain lilies and old parchment. Ahead of them lay a colossal cavern, so vast that the ceiling was lost in shadows. Spanning across the deep, bottomless chasm was a narrow bridge made of solid, translucent crystal that glowed with a soft, pale blue light.

"Draeven's corruption hasn't touched this place," Azeal whispered, his eyes scanning the immense, quiet space. "He truly doesn't know this passage exists. We are safe from his shadows here."

"But we are being watched," Vaelora said softly, her eyes fixed on the crystal bridge ahead.

As her boots touched the glowing path, the pale blue light flared brilliantly. Wisps of silver mist began to rise from the chasm, swirling gently before shaping themselves into towering, ethereal figures. They were the spirits of the ancient kings and queens—Vaelora's ancestors. They wore spectral armor and glowing crowns, looking down with expressions of solemn gravity.

The spirits completely ignored Azeal, their silver eyes locking instantly onto Vaelora. The royal blood in her veins burned, reacting to the presence of her lineage. A deep, resonant voice echoed directly inside Vaelora's mind, vibrating with ancient power.

"Who dares tread the Path of the Dead? Who claims the right to pass through the sacred roots of the kingdom?"

Vaelora stepped forward, her hand dropping away from her daggers to show respect. She stood tall, lifting her chin, her silver hair catching the pale light of the spirits. Looking straight into the eyes of her spectral ancestors, she spoke with absolute royal dignity:

"I am the heir to the Seven Kingdoms. We seek passage to take back our empire from the usurper Draeven Zareth, and to bring light back to our nation once more."

The spectral figures shifted, their silver eyes piercing straight into Vaelora's soul, processing her words.

"The line of the Seven Kingdoms is pure within you, young Princess," the ancestral voice boomed gently through the cavern. "But the throne is not secure. Draeven Zareth seeks to block the rightful rise of Prince Azeal, scheming to place his own blood upon the high seat of the Seven Realms."

"We won't let him succeed," Azeal spoke up, standing firmly beside Vaelora. "Draeven thinks he can stop my coronation and steal the seven crowns for himself or his son. He left this Vault unguarded because he thinks the Seven Kingdoms are already within his grasp, but we will enter the Capital tonight and secure the crown before his lineage can touch it."

The spirits looked at Vaelora's fierce resolve, seeing the weight of the Seven Kingdoms resting on her shoulders. Suddenly, the mist around them shifted, forming vivid, moving illusions of their long, agonizing journey. Vaelora saw the burning ruins of Aethelgard, the terrifying maw of Jormungandr, and finally, the roaring waves where Captain Gideon and his brave Drazhin crew were dragged into the abyss. The painful memories rushed back all at once, testing her resolve.

"They died because of my quest," Vaelora murmured, her hand trembling as she looked at the illusion of Gideon's tragic sacrifice. "So many lives lost... just so I could stand here as the heir."

Azeal stepped beside her, his warm hand gripping her shoulder tightly, grounding her. He looked up at the spirits with fierce protection in his eyes. "They didn't die for a lost cause, Vaelora. They died believing in the queen you are going to become, and the peace we will bring. Do not let their sacrifice become a burden—let it be your strength."

Vaelora closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and let the grief transform into a cold, unbreakable resolve. When she opened her eyes, they shone with the true fire of leadership.

"I carry their memories not as a regret, but as a promise," she spoke to her ancestors, her voice echoing with absolute authority. "Every life lost on this road will be honored. I am the true blood of this realm, and I will not stop until my people are free."

The illusions of the dead dissolved back into pure, harmless starlight. The spectral ancestors looked at each other and nodded in silent approval. The giant figures raised their silver swords in a royal salute to their rightful princess, and the thick mist blocking the end of the bridge parted completely.

"Pass, True Heir of the Seven Realms. The ancestors walk with you."

With the blessing of the old world backing them, Vaelora and Azeal sprinted across the remaining stretch of the crystal bridge, reaching a small stone archway at the far end. As they pushed through the final heavy curtain of vines, a gust of wind brought the distant, unmistakable sound of war drums.
