Chapter 71 - Guide of the Forgotten Path

The secret passage beneath the Vault of Souls led them through the cold, silent mountain roots, winding through ancient tunnels that had not seen a living soul for generations. Just as the darkness of the cavern began to feel endless, a soft, ethereal light flickered in the distance.

Stepping out of the narrow rock fissure, Azeal and Vaelora found themselves in a hidden, misty valley tucked between the highest peaks of the mountains. Standing directly in their path, bathed in the silver glow of the midnight moon, was a creature of pure myth.

It was a magnificent Nine-Tailed Fox.

Its coat was a brilliant, pristine white that seemed to shimmer like fresh snow, and its nine majestic tails floated gracefully behind it like waves of silk, each tipped with a faint, burning blue flame. The creature turned its intelligent, golden eyes toward them. It did not display any fear or hostility; instead, it let out a soft, melodic chime and turned around, gesturing for them to follow.

"A celestial guardian," Vaelora whispered, recognizing the ancient creature from old lore. "It knows who we are."

The Nine-Tailed Fox darted through the thick mountain mist, leading them along a treacherous, hidden ridge that completely bypassed Draeven Zareth's outermost mountain scouts. With magical grace, the fox guided them straight to a concealed, ivory door carved into the very foundations of the Capital. As soon as Azeal pushed the door open, revealing the grand corridors of Solthera, the magnificent beast bowed its head to the true princess and vanished into the swirling mist like starlight.

They stepped through the threshold, entering the Great Hall of the Capital, which was filled to the brim with anxious whispers. King Aetheron sat upon the secondary throne, his face weathered with worry, flanked by Lord Kaelor Draven and Lady Seraphine Draven. Surrounding them were the remaining noble houses, royal guards, and the fierce Drazhin citizens of Solthera. Every single eye in the room shifted instantly toward the grand doors as Azeal and Vaelora stepped through.

A collective gasp of relief and hope echoed through the hall. Cheers erupted from the Drazhin soldiers. To everyone gathered, the narrative was simple and clear: Prince Azeal had returned alive, which meant he must have passed the deadly Zarethian Trial within the Shadow Abyss. In their minds, he was the rightful champion who would now ascend the high seat as the King of the Seven Kingdoms to defeat the looming dark.

Lord Kaelor stepped forward, a proud smile warming his features. "Prince Azeal! You have conquered the abyss. Solthera is ready for its King!"

Azeal stood in the center of the hall, the weight of their false hope heavy on his shoulders. He exchanged a solemn look with Vaelora. He did not step toward the crown. Instead, he took a step back, allowing Vaelora to move forward.

Silently, Vaelora unbuckled the leather straps of her heavy pack. With steady hands, she drew out the ancient, shimmering artifact they had crossed oceans and fought titans to protect—the Book of Origins. Its cosmic pages glowed with a faint, ethereal light, casting a majestic aura across the marble floors.

"The trial was not what you think," Vaelora spoke, her voice clear and resonant, cutting through the cheers of the crowd. She stepped toward the dais and presented the sacred text. "King Aetheron, look upon the true artifact of the prophecy."

King Aetheron's eyes widened in sheer shock. The color drained from his face as he stared at the Book of Origins. He slowly stood up from his seat, his hands trembling as he reached out to touch the ancient bindings. He opened the book, his eyes racing across the cryptic, glowing script that had been sealed for centuries.

As he read the hidden lines, the truth finally unveiled itself, and a devastating realization settled over the old king. He looked up, his voice hoarse as he addressed the silent, stunned hall.

"The prophecy... we were all wrong," King Aetheron whispered, his gaze shifting from Azeal directly to Vaelora. "The Shadow Abyss did not choose a King. The Zarethian Trial was never meant for Azeal."

The hall fell into a suffocating, dead silence. King Aetheron turned the glowing pages, revealing the ancient lore to the council. "The royal bloodline of the Seven Kingdoms is pure within Princess Vaelora. She is the true heir to the high seat. But..." The king's voice caught in his throat, tight with a sudden, profound dread. "...the Book of Origins warns of a cataclysmic curse. If Princess Vaelora ascends the throne as the sole ruler, an age-old prophecy of destruction will be triggered. The world of man will shatter, and this entire world will be completely destroyed."

A murmur of panic rippled through Lord Kaelor and Lady Seraphine. The very truth that could save them from Draeven was also the key to the world's end.

"But we do not have the luxury of time," King Aetheron continued, closing the book with a heavy thud, his eyes hardening. "Draeven Zareth knows we hold the key to his undoing. He will not sit idly by while his schemes fall apart."

As if responding to his words, a scout rushed into the back of the hall, breathless and pale. "Your Majesty! Draeven Zareth is marching! He is assembling his full, unmitigated power at the borders. A massive shadow-army is preparing to strike Solthera with everything he has!"

The threat was immediate. To save the Seven Kingdoms from both Draeven's impending siege and the apocalyptic prophecy of the Book of Origins, King Aetheron raised his hands, commanding the absolute attention of the room. He looked at Azeal and Vaelora, seeing the deep, unbreakable bond they had forged through blood and survival across the seas.

"There is only one way to bind the crown without triggering the end of the world," King Aetheron announced firmly, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "To balance the magic of the Seven Kingdoms and protect the realm, I officially announce the immediate union of Prince Azeal and Princess Vaelora. They must marry, and they must rule together. Only a shared throne can break the curse and stand against the darkness marching upon our gates."

Azeal and Vaelora looked at each other, the ultimate weight of their destiny settling between them as the war drums of Draeven Zareth began to echo in the distance.
