Chapter 6 - Phase Two

The attack came at dusk.

Magnolia was alive with its usual noise when the sky flickered.

Not darkened.

Flickered.

Like a faulty lantern.

Kael felt it instantly.

His shadow tightened around his feet.

Across the guild hall, Natsu Dragneel paused mid-bite.

"You feel that?"

Gray was already standing.

Gray Fullbuster's breath misted faintly despite the warm room.

"That's not normal magic, it feels just like.... the cathedral."

Suddenly outside a loud pulse echoed through the streets.

Windows shattered.

Screams followed.

Kael moved first.

The town square had changed.

Black sigils glowed beneath the cobblestones, spreading in geometric patterns. Three separate pillars of shadow rose at equal distances, forming a triangular barrier.

At its center—

A robed figure stood calmly.

Not demonic.

Not monstrous.

Human.

Tall. Silver hair. Eyes glowing faint violet.

"Devil Slayer," the figure called.

Kael stepped forward.

Natsu cracked his knuckles. "You're not gonna monologue, are you?" i am all fired up!!.

The man ignored him.

"You destroyed our fragment at the cathedral."

Gray narrowed his eyes. "Our?"

The robed man smiled faintly.

"We are the Ashen Covenant."

The name meant nothing to the crowd.

But Kael felt the weight behind it.

The man lifted one hand.

The three pillars activated simultaneously.

The barrier snapped into place—

Separating them.

Kael stood inside the central triangle.

Natsu and Gray were forced outside its edges.

"What the—?!" Natsu slammed his fist against the barrier.

Flames burst outward.

"Fire Dragon's Iron Fist"

The strike hit—but dispersed harmlessly.

Gray stepped in immediately.

"Ice-Make: Geyser! "

A surge of ice erupted upward, striking the barrier's base.

It didn't crack.

The robed man tilted his head slightly.

"Phase Two," he said softly.

From the outer streets, constructs emerged.

Unlike the cathedral shadows, these were solid.

Armored.

Three of them lunged at Natsu.

He grinned wildly.

"Finally!"

"Fire Dragon's Roar! "

Flames tore through the nearest construct, blasting it into rubble.

Two more flanked him.

He leapt forward.

"Fire Dragon's Wing Attack!"

A spinning arc of fire shattered both in one motion.

Gray faced his own wave.

"Ice-Make: Cannon!"

A massive ice blast fired forward, freezing a line of advancing constructs mid-charge.

He clenched his fist.

They exploded into shards.

Inside the barrier, Kael stood alone with the robed man.

"You're isolating me," Kael said calmly.

"Yes."

The man extended his hand.

Shadow rose from the sigils beneath them—not wild, but precise.

"It is inefficient to test you with fragments."

Kael's shadow rose to meet it.

"You're not a demon," Kael said.

"No."

The man's smile widened slightly.

"But I study them."

The shadows attacked.

Kael moved.

"Shadow Devil's Rift Step."

He vanished into darkness, reappearing behind the robed man.

"Shadow Devil's Crescent."

The arc sliced cleanly—

But passed through.

An afterimage.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

The real body appeared behind him.

A palm struck forward.

Dark energy slammed into Kael's back, throwing him across the barrier's interior.

He rolled, sliding to one knee.

The energy burned differently.

Not demonic.

Refined.

"You refine abyssal residue," Kael realized.

The man nodded.

"And you consume it."

Outside, Natsu slammed both fists into the barrier again.

"HEY! STOP IGNORING US!"

Gray placed a hand on the surface.

His eyes sharpened.

"There are three anchor points," he said. "Destroy the pillars."

Natsu grinned. "Say less."

They split instantly.

Natsu charged the nearest pillar.

Constructs surged to intercept.

He inhaled deeply.

Flames coiled down his throat.

"Fire Dragon's Roar!"

The blast struck the pillar directly.

Cracks formed.

Gray reached the second.

Constructs swarmed him.

He slammed his hands to the ground.

"Ice-Make: Unlimited!"

Dozens of weapons formed simultaneously—spears, hammers, blades—launching outward in every direction.

The constructs shattered.

He drove a massive ice spear into the pillar's core.

Inside the barrier, the robed man raised both hands.

Dark sigils formed around Kael midair.

Chains of shadow wrapped around his limbs.

Kael strained.

They weren't overwhelming—

They were calculating.

"You hesitate," the man observed. "You fear losing control."

Kael's breathing slowed.

"I don't fear it."

The chains tightened.

"Prove it."

Kael closed his eyes.

He didn't fight the shadow.

He allowed it.

Accepted it.

His magic surged—not violently, but completely.

"Shadow Devil's Dominion."

The space inside the barrier darkened instantly.

Not chaotic.

Commanded.

The chains shattered.

The robed man stepped back slightly for the first time.

Kael moved through the darkness like it was water.

He appeared directly in front of him.

One hand extended.

"Shadow Devil's Execution."

A concentrated blade of abyss pierced forward—

This time striking solid flesh.

The robed man staggered.

Not destroyed.

But wounded.

Outside, Natsu roared as his pillar collapsed.

Gray shattered the second.

The barrier flickered violently.

The final pillar cracked—

Then exploded.

The barrier fell.

Kael stepped forward as the robed man retreated toward dissolving shadow.

"This isn't defeat," the man said calmly. "This is data."

His body disintegrated into mist.

Silence fell over the ruined square.

Natsu ran over immediately.

"You okay?!"

"I'm fine," Kael replied.

Gray studied the fading sigils.

"They weren't trying to win," he said.

"No," Kael agreed.

"They were measuring."

Natsu cracked his knuckles again.

"Then next time we hit harder."

Kael looked at his shadow.

It wasn't restless.

It wasn't unstable.

It was evolving.

And now—

It was being studied.

High above Magnolia, unseen eyes closed.

Phase Two was complete.

Phase Three would require escalation.
